If you haven’t been given information on the right to cancel (and didn’t walk into the traders place of business to form the contract) then the cancellation period is 1 year and 14 days.
If you cancel during the period and the trader has failed to provide the above information no payment is due.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
So if the electrician has carried out the work with reasonable skill and care, the installation is fully tested and working, what are you saying? If you haven’t been given information on the right to cancel (and didn’t walk into the traders place of business to form the contract) then the cancellation period is 1 year and 14 days.

Exactly what I've said, for a distance or off premises contract where the correct information specifically related to the right to cancel isn't provided the extended cancellation period applies and where the consumer cancels within the cancellation period and the trader has failed to provide the correct information mentioned the consumer is not bound to pay for any services, in part or in full, already received.DB1904 said:

Caveat being OP may have to pay for any goods supplied and I forgot to add the OP should formally cancel the contract via a durable medium. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
I'm guessing you didn't get any other quotes...?
Personally, I would get another independent electrician to quote the work. You might have to pay them to quote (making it clear the work has been done and you feel you are being ripped off), but this would give you a rough idea of how much others would have charged. Or post on one of those quote sites to get several quotes.
In practice you have agreed verbally to it being done for "no more than" £5800 so will have to work with this figure. This sounds like a ridiculous amount - you could rewire a huge house for this!!!
I would WRITE DOWN exactly how many hours have been worked, and ask the electrician a cost for all supplies e.g. wires, lights. A daily electrician rate is about £200-£250 round here, or perhaps £30/hour.
You're saying he has been there 6 days and no more than a maximum of 4 hours, so that's 24 hours @£30/hour = £720.
I think I would be stating that I would be paying no more than £2000 for the job unless they could provide receipts of materials for more than this!!!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
So what I think you're saying is anyone could cancel a contract after the work was done just because they didn't receive information on how to cancel?

I've had exactly the same discussion before.

OP - where are you based and is the contractor vat registered?0

Get more quotes! Make sure the sparky is registered on elecsa or one of the others, people do try it on i had a plumber quote me £400 per hour to fit a new toilet and said it would take 8 hours, i eventually found a plumber who supplied and fitted the toilet for £250 which goes to show.Enjoy everyday like it's your last!0

I'm in the SE and would expect 350 per day based on 8 hours with materials at cost plus 20%. All generally plus vat as most seem to be registered0

For what reason does a electrician being registered with one of the scams make them a better electrician?Frank99 said:Get more quotes!
