Council tax banding

Hi all, thought i would jump on the relevance of this thread rather than start a new one. We moved into our house March 2021, our CT band moved up a band due to the previous owner having an extension put onto the house increasing the size. This was in line with the two neighbouring properties (same number of bedrooms etc). We have just now been moved into the next higher band, which i believe is an oversight from the VOA.
My question if anyone has experience on this is do i have to appeal that they have changed my band twice in 12 months or can i contact them them to say that they have made a recent change in error?0 -
So when you viewed property it was in a band now you moved in it as gone up a band due to works carried by previous owner so which band was property in when you viewed and now it is which band0

Contact them first and if it is not a mistake which they are prepared to correct, then appeal if you don't agree with the new band.TheJP said:Hi all, thought i would jump on the relevance of this thread rather than start a new one. Yes when we viewed the house it was in band C, when we moved in it was moved to band D now less than 12 months on they have moved us to band F. I have used the Gov website to challenge them.Kuga247 said:So when you viewed property it was in a band now you moved in it as gone up a band due to works carried by previous owner so which band was property in when you viewed and now it is which band0 -
Think I would ask council if it’s correct sounds strange why should they change without notice of banding change if your neighbours are the same size etc why should they bring you in line with them then increase further0

The council have nothing to do with what band you are in, its the VOA who decide. The council just take the money.Kuga247 said:Think I would ask council if it’s correct sounds strange why should they change without notice of banding change if your neighbours are the same size etc why should they bring you in line with them then increase further0 -
Yes but they send the bills out VOA set it and the council take it0

The VOA sent a letter a couple of weeks ago stating that the band will be re-assessed due to us buying it and the previous owners extending it, trouble is they already did that after we moved in. Looks like an oversight/incompetence from VOA systems.Kuga247 said:Yes but they send the bills out VOA set it and the council take it0 -
Going from a Band C to a Band F,suggests one of 3 things.TheJP said:

1. The original band was too low to start with.
2. There has been an exceptionally large extension, which for some reason was underbanded on the first increase to Band D.
3. There has been an error on the part of the VOA in increasing the band a second time..
Usually (but not always) if 1 or 2 happen, the VOA would send an accompanying explanatory letter. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Sorry but the VOA will never say they have made a mistake it’s more than their jobs worth0
