  • My mum told me a few days ago that the olive oil she routinely gets in her supermarket order (750ml) has now gone up to £11. ELEVEN POUNDS

I'm sure Lidl is a good bit cheaper, even for their swankier Greek and Spanish EVOOs

Ordered olive oil (750ml) in supermarket delivery last month : £8.80 (and I baulked at that). Same bottle this month (and in reality we’re talking opposite ends of the same month): £11.80! And they say inflation is coming down. Bizarrely, EVOO was cheaper than the blended stuff… so we’ll be being super healthy and using that this month. None of it’s the cheapest out there because I want glass not plastic bottles but frankly the difference between own brand and what I buy wasn’t that significant anyway.

£11 😱! I did used to get a Lidl one, but had to switch to Sainsbury's when they were sold out for a while and now I really like the taste of this one 🤦‍♀️ Will browse in Lidl again, even if just to remind myself that I can afford it - I just don't want to pay it 🤣!

  • These are serious olive oil prices …
I guess sadly as the  war in Ukraine still ongoing so stocks of oil now finished so

I use Lidl - have the odd expensive bottle of virgin oo for salads only

No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

  • Even if inflation goes down, it won't mean prices will go down in price, just the rate of increase in price will slow down. With a poor winter we should expect food prices to continue to be challenging.

I don't think I've ever used olive oil. What do you use it for?

Does sunflower oil go off? Pretty sure I've had mine for minimum 2 years and not thought about it.

Not sure what's in it to go off 🤷‍♀️? It might deteriorate a bit, I guess, but probably not that you'd notice.

I use olive oil as a salad dressing, in a yummy traybake recipe I've recently discovered 😋, in pizza making, and the odd slosh when frying onions and garlic. All other frying (er, just eggs, I think 🤔) I use frylight

  • Hi SC, unfortunately I think high olive oil prices may be here to stay, I read their has been a new olive tree disease in the Med which has lead to a massive die-off of trees. We use a lot of EVOO MrCM, true to his Portuguese roots, pours it on pretty much everything (liberally). I too really want to find a cheaper way to buy it, will follow with interest  CM

All oil will go rancid eventually, but we’re still using EVOO e we bought during the first lockdown (it’s an expensive one, so used sparingly for salads). We use normal olive oil for all cooking activities - so it’s having quite an impact on the budget (such as it is).

I’d read about that too CM, but had forgotten, so thanks for the reminder.
