"It worked fine with PayPal but it looks like it is no longer possible because of the new Managed Payments system."

Quite the opposite - MP cuts out the middleman (Paypal) and the money you make from selling is paid direct into your bank account.

I must say that I was quite against the idea of managed payments, but I’m actually getting rather fond of it now. My payments are sent net of fees, so no more large bills I have to be ready for at end of the month. I’ve used managed payments to refund an overpayment , send partial refunds etc all very easily and without any fuss whatsoever.

I’m coming round to being a fan of MP.
Managed payments are fine until you are  being asked to provide a government issued photo ID and you don't have one. Then you can spend hours and hours talking to eBay assistants to no avail. They just repeat over and over again "please send your ID documents. If you don't have them, you can't sell on eBay." Full stop.
When I asked for how long they are going to keep copies of my Photo ID and bank statement, I was told they will keep them indefinitely. I then asked how exactly my documents are protected since at the moment identity theft is a fairly common, and got no answer whatsoever. The assistant claimed, however, that all this is because of the new payment system. I am not an expert in banking regulations, but I doubt this is really the case. There is a number of online-only banks in UK which don't keep copies of ID documents of their customers.
I believe eBay is a monopolist in private online auctions and therefore can do whatever they want.

    Apologies for the rant.

You need a photo.id - if you don't have one ykou can't use ebay.
  • I would recommend depop as another, i fort it was just for clothes but i sell 2/5 wax melts a week on it.

People list all sorts on it and that is direct to your paypal.

I'm not sure there are. If they don't have all your ID then they will have sourced from a credit reference agency. Ebay managed payments don't access your credit file. If you do think they are breaching banking regulations you can contact the Financial Ombudsman.

There are loads of small auction houses who will take private stock and sell it online. They're usually more picky and expensive than Ebay. Though if you do have a selection of mixed items, as the OP, you could try a few local auction houses and see what they say. There are some good ones dotted around the country.
The caveat is to beware of their charges and how long they take to pay you. Ebay has a host of advantages in that respect. Almost instant payment and relatively low charges in comparison.
The field is narrowing though as most of the small auction houses now sell online to a wider audience.

On the contrary, they say explicitly that they do access credit file here see part 4.4 of the user agreement:

We also collect personal data about you from other sources and from third parties to the extent permitted by applicable law. In particular, this includes the following data:

    • Data from public sources (e.g. demographic data)
    • Data from credit agencies or bureaus (e.g. credit reports/checks, identity confirmation, data for risk modeling and setting of credit limits)
    • Data from data providers (e.g. "Know Your Customer"/identity verification, demographic, interest-based and online advertising related data)
    • With regard to our payment services for sellers: data from government or other sources concerning any previous convictions of the respective seller, to the extent permitted by applicable law
We combine or connect the personal data we collect from you with data from these other sources.

  • I am looking for alternatives to eBay. eBay does not work for me anymore.

I moved away from eBay a few months back, I now use eBid for my sales. I am not going to say it is better for selling its a little slower not so many members. I only use buy it now for my sales as this suites me. I have had over 40 sales during the last 3 months and on the plus side the selling fees are far less and you can use PayPal as you used to be able to do with eBay. I understand its not for everyone but it works for me

I purposefully didn’t mention Ebid as an alternative but am pleased to hear someone is making sales, I didn’t know that anyone was actually still trying.

Ebid are older than ebay in the UK and due to poor sale history were one of the only other sites that ebay didn’t bother buying up. I ran a store on there for a few years and didn’t even cover the cost of my annual membership, so if anyone does look at Ebid don’t be in a rush to sign up for their limited offer on lifetime membership (it’s like the DFS sofa sale and never ends) .

40 sales on there, must be losing at least double that by not using ebay I would have thought.

Ebay are nowhere near perfect and most of us probably have a whinge about them quite often but its hard
to ignore when most of the buyers/sellers are using it.

This is my thought exactly , I certainly have issues with ebay but if my stuff is going to sell that’s where it sells. Likewise if I’m looking to buy things I tend to check ebay and Amazon, it would never occur to me to look on ebid .
