I even stayed up until the night tariff came on, at midnight, to see if I could program them then, but the displays still were blank.0 -

Thank you!I agree with Swipe.I'd also let the agent know that I'd be holding them responsible for the additional cost of heating my home on daytime-rate electricity until such time as the storage heaters are commissioned and functional.N. You could try telling the agent that the heaters must have new 24 supplies installed. Try getting a few ball park quotations yourself for the following:-
- install three new circuits from the meter to the three radiators;
- connect each radiator to the old and new circuits in accordance with the wiring shown in Fig 9a;
- connect all the new circuits to the 24h supply at the meter.
Email some local electricians some photos showing the radiators and the routes back to the meter cupboard so that they can get an idea of the distances and the work involved. I'm only guessing, but with Covid staff shortages, New Year hols, high cold weather demand and the urgent timescale, I imagine the cost might well run to four figures, especially if floorboards have to be lifted or cables chased into walls.You could helpfully 'suggest' to the agent that to save time you'll organise the work and deduct the cost from the rent. That may help to concentrate their minds wonderfully.In the meantime you could also investigate the cheapskate solution which is to:-- connect each radiator to the old circuit in accordance with the wiring shown in Fig 9b
- change the old circuit connections from E7 to 24h at the meter.
If the agent balks at the cost of the three new 24h circuits, you could then come back a bit later and generously suggest that you will accept the cheapskate solution provided that it can all be completed PDQ.1 -

So I don't have proof yet of exactly what time the night time rate starts. Should be midnight to 7 according to the provider.0 -

The supply company won't necessarily know, the switching times are set by your DNO and can even vary from meter to meter. If your NSHs (and immersion heater) are not switched by the meter (the cheapskate solution you are likely to end up with) then it's critically important to establish beyond doubt what the meter is really doing. For example, if it turns out that you program everything to work midnight to 7am but in reality it's 1am to 8am then the first hour will be always charged at the peak rate. Guesswork could be a very expensive mistake.If you post a photo of the meter then someone will come along and explain how to see when it changes over. Also have a look to see whether the immersion heater outlet has a neon indicator, if so that's a much easier way to see precisely when the night rate is in operation.0 -

The immersion heater doesn't have a neon indicator as far as I can see but I need to borrow a ladder to be able to have a closer look.
Here's a photo of my meter.

If you poke the blue button the screen will light up and let you read it.In the bottom right-hand corner of the screen there should be two "switch" indicators, numbered 1 and 2. does one of these show as open and one as closed?
- Open looks a bit like o/o
- Closed a bit like o-o
Edit: Here's my meter, I don't have E7 so I've only got one switch indicator and it's closed. You can see it numbered "1" in the bottom right of the screen:N. Hampshire, he/him. Octopus Intelligent Go elec & Tracker gas / Vodafone BB / iD mobile. Ripple Kirk Hill member.

So you're saying that that's the way to tell whether the day or night tariff is on, right? So it's still a matter of staying up to see when it switches?0 -
Nothing about smart meters is ever customer friendly, why make things simple when you can make them massively complicated !Looking through the 108-page manual, it seems the outputs are denoted by the switch symbols in the bottom right corner labelled 1 and 2.During the day I'd expect the symbols to look like this. All consumption is charged at the higher day rate but only the 24h circuits are live.
1
2
When the night rate kicks in, switch 2 closes. All consumption is charged at the lower night rate and both the 24h and E7 circuits are live.1
2
Things might be the other way round (switch 1 changing over) but the time when the rate changes will still be obvious.Perhaps someone who has one of these meters or industry knowledge will confirm whether this is correct?Edit: Beatern to it by QrizB ! Good to see we both agree. Have a big mug of hot chocolate and sit by the meter at the witching hour. Check again in the morning to make sure there's not a two hour gap (e.g. my E7 times are 2230 - 0030 and 0230 - 0730 GMT).1 -
The "2" will close when you get E7. The "1" should always remain closed.Yes, it will mean staying up late and/or getting up early, sorry.
