When you write the cheque fold it several times along both axes, so they can't pay it in through a cash machine and have to queue up for someone to type in the details manually.0

Nah, those days are gone.outtatune said:When you write the cheque fold it several times along both axes, so they can't pay it in through a cash machine and have to queue up for someone to type in the details manually.
Today you can actually pay cheques in with your phone, from the comfort of your own armchair.
I agree though that cheques are now very old fashioned but it's their choice, just like some shops say 'cash only'.1 -
Great. But this isn't some surprise one-off payment the OP is talking about, it's a regular invoice. Presumably the freeholder hasn't suddenly decided they only want to accept cheques having previously accepted bank transfers. And I'm sure you (or the OP) could source a cheque if you had to.Murphybear said:
My husband and I have 5 bank accounts between us. None of them issue cheque books. We pay everything online. Never had any problems so far.user1977 said:Just send them a cheque. Will be easier than arguing about it.0 -
I've just signed a rental agreement with my new landlord. In the lease it says he only accepts payment in tamagotchis.
Can I make him take payment in pokewalkers instead?0 -
Last year, I was getting a new Burmese and asked the breeder which method of payment? I said cash or bank transfer, and she asked for a cheque. I still have cheque book, but it must be at least 5 years plus since last used. I phoned my bank to ask if I could still use it? Yes.0

Yes.I think as long as the details are correct (account no/ sort code) then you can still use it. They don't have an expiry date.Come on you Irons1

If someone is saying they only accept cheques and you don't have a chequebook then surely you just say "Sorry, but I don't have a chequebook - what other method of payment can you accept"0

Legally speaking you can issue a cheque on any kind of paper (or any object for that matter), as long as it contains your bank details, signature and amount. Whether the recipient will accept it or not is a different matter.0

How much will your bank charge you to process something which isn't on a cheque they've issued?neilmcl said:Legally speaking you can issue a cheque on any kind of paper (or any object for that matter), as long as it contains your bank details, signature and amount. If it came to court and you could demonstrate that you'd attempted to pay by other means (other *sensible* means, I don't mean a sack of 1p coins) which the other party had refused (because they seem to have forgotten which year it is), I don't imagine the court would look too favourably on that - that's just speculation on my part though.0
