I am dealing with someone who will only accept a cheque as payment for ground rent. I have a bank account and so does he and I want to only pay by transfer, what are my rights? Furthermore the landlord has imposed a surcharge as I've not paid using his preferred method, despite this never be contractually agreed. Please help

Just send them a cheque. Will be easier than arguing about it.0

What wrong with just writing them a cheque?
Apart from 'I don't want to'0 -
You have a right not to pay, but then presumably he has a right to pursue you for payment. Is it really worth the hassle for the sake of not wanting to write a cheque?0

Maybe the OP like a lot of people does not have a cheque book. Which would require going to a branch to get them to issue a cheque. Which may mean a long trip. When it can simply be paid by internet banking.
Seems odd that a business would want payment via cheque given that will most likely cost them to deposit.Life in the slow lane0 -
True, but I took the OP literally when they said "I only want to pay by transfer" rather than "I can't pay by cheque."born_again said:Maybe the OP like a lot of people does not have a cheque book. You don't have a right to tell someone else what payment methods they must accept.Since you owe them money, your options are:-
- Go to the office of the landlord or managing agent with a handful of cash
- Pay by whatever other methods they accept
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Or wait for them to take you to court and pay the debt with bags of 1p coins

Which can also be refused and would add the court fees to the bill.molerat said:Or wait for them to take you to court and pay the debt with bags of 1p coins
Just use a cheque and rember thats the payment method for the next time.
Have you read the Lease? The ground rent terms will be in that. The term "forfeiture action" can also be used against you in court if it gets that far, you certainly Dont want that.0 -
My husband and I have 5 bank accounts between us. None of them issue cheque books. We pay everything online. Never had any problems so far.user1977 said:Just send them a cheque. Will be easier than arguing about it.0 -
Which doesn't help the OP when the person he is paying requires a cheque.Murphybear said:
