Seeing the thread about kids' clothes has made me wonder, how many outfits do we really need?
In the past, clothes weren't washed as often as we do now and I'm sure they had far fewer clothes. Surely in our efforts to be OS and simplify our lives, the past could teach us a lot.
I need to go through my wardrobe in the next week and am wondering how much I can actually get rid of. I'm sure I don't need 10 pairs of jeans, 6 pairs of black trousers, 15 blouses etc
We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

I saw a programme once that said we wear the same 20% of our clothes, 80% of the time.

    I reckon its true too.
  • Hi there  I've stopped buying clothes, apart from the odd thing from charity shops. DH and I have gone from a wardrobe each, to one between us, which has created space in our bedroom :j

I'll add this to the existing thread on this subject to keep ideas together.

  • Hi everyone

I recently visited a friend who has a passion for clothes and loved looking through her stuff (like you do when you're in your teens) She has a ton of really beautiful clothes. I on the other hand have as follows

    4 Jeans/trousers
    3 skirts
    1 shorts
    8 vest tshirts
    7 tops/shirts
    3 cardigan/jumpers
3 coats (one of which I have never worn)
    6 shoes/sandals/flip flops/trainers/slippers
    2 house trousers
    2 house tops

doing a quick total the whole lot comes to about 500 euros - I live in Holland.

I work at home so don't need work clothes, I only "dress up' when going out of the house and then only wearing jeans(skirts and shorts in the summer) Once a year I have to dress up for a company "do", luckily it is in december so I wear my trusty black wool trousers and a woolly jumper/cardigan and borrow the MIL's boots. I'm fairly happy with my rather small wardrobe, it works most of the time.

So being really nosey, It would be interesting to see how many clothes you have? Do you wear everything you have in your wardrobe? are you happy with all your clothes and if you totted up all the items, how much have you spent.

  • Now there's a question! My wardrobe has too much stuff in it to list. I'm delighted with my clothes, it's what happens to them once they're on me that's the problem!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I don't have "house clothes" though. You could guarantee that if I was in what I call my 'scrubs' all day, I'd have tons of unexpected visitors!

I have bought lots of unnecessary and too expensive things though, pre my lightbulb moment.

I don't go out often, but I have several outfits that I can use for dressy evenings, I wouldn't be happy with the same thing each year. But that's me. :)

I can't believe you have so few clothes. Well done you. I have clothes in various categories. I have home/yard clothes. Casual clothes that I'd wear to shopping, outings etc & a few outfits if I need to dress up. These I don't wear a lot as I don't go out posh much these days but they aren't fashion items so won't out date in a hurry. Nice black dress, black pants & top etc.

I pretty much wear everything in my wardrobe although I've got a couple of things that I won't wear atm as they are a bit tight. I'll give them another season and if I still can't squeeze into them, I'll get rid of them. :D I'm generally happy with my wardrobe and really haven't spent a fortune as I bargain shop for clothes off season & recently started to sew my own.

I need to buy some new summer sandals asap though. ;) I've only got 1 brown pair atm.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

I have less than you...but I need at least another pair of trousers/skirt.

The reason I have so little (apart from using the capsule wardrobe technique) is that I am breastfeeding 2 little ones and I find my body changes size very often.

I only have 2 trousers, 1 skirt and 2 long-sleeved tops that fit me at the moment (plus some tank tops but in this weather I only use them under other clothes for warmth)

I need more clothes but I am very, very fussy and also don't like spending a lot and also struggle with shopping with 2 little ones constantly asking to go for a wee/needing a snack/etc/etc!!

  • I've just had a clear out & thrown out all the stuff that is too big/small/stained to wear anymore.
I have 3 prs of trousers all bought new
3 cotton skirts bought from charity shops
6 short sleeved tops bought from charity shops
1 thick cardi (given to me)
1 sleeveless black dress (given to me)
1 straight black skirt (bought from charity shop)
1 red suit that I bought for DD1's wedding 7 years ago & wore to DD2's wedding last year.
2 posh coats (both were given to me)
2 fleeces (both given to me)
The total comes to about £205, but £150 of that is the suit I bought for 7 years ago.

My list is pretty similar as well - I also work from home like the OP. I haven't bought anything for ages, and any new additions are now home-sewn with the exception of jeans (I have 2 pairs) and T-shirts. I have one black dress which is 10 years old and it works as well for parties as for funerals.

We still have lots of clothes clutter, but it is all DH's!! He has just tonnes of shirts, overshirts, shoes, coats etc. Not that he buys much, but he never, ever throws anything away.
