Will reply to messages above later. Today I experimented with Oli0 (top from one place) and Too g00d to g0 (£3.09 bag) Vs what's YS in shop that I fancied (middle).
Obviously the top one was free so a bargain. I plan to make banana bread so condition not an issue. Will freeze some pastries including the doughnuts. The bottom set I think I am too fussy an eater to do that one again. I'd prefer to go to Mr A one evening around 6.30 and get YS stuff of my choice.
Unfortunately I hate kale and am not fond of red cabbage. May try in a soup but not a fan.
Going into a shop though including the £3 tgtg I spent about £25 today. Think will keep an eye out for freebies but otherwise aim for YS items. It does mean I will have more variety for a bit though.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Hi Stripey, Lucielle, Sandy and edinburgher
Well we had garlic chicken and roasties for tea with the broccoli and cauli I froze earlier in the week and some peas, onion and carrots. I am having a YS doughnut for pud. I've given some to DD and frozen the rest. We may have free croissants warmed in the microwave tomorrow am on our early start. I've started making a soup with some of my haul from earlier - I will post the ingredients if it tastes nice when I'm done. I've also batch cooked some chilli. Freezers are pretty full - so may just use freezer bags so the 'containers' take less room.
I've talked to DD about trying to get her Dad to take her some Monday mornings as I'm really struggling. She will ask and see if I can then do some of her Friday collections. This would save me time and £ and mean I didn't start the week completely wiped. I need to do some work tonight to catch up on what I should have done last week which is all part of it. I'm planning a nap when I get back tomorrow in the hope that it stops me getting too exhausted. She has said how much she values sleeping in her own bed which is one of the reasons I kept the house... but is unhappy that she has to pay anything at all towards living here as we supported DS through uni. I understand her point but my mortgage payment is 8-9 times what it was - and I am not longer dual income. She doesn't appreciate at all that her living at home costs me £ and her trips to work cost me a fortune. Last week I drove 100 miles for her and about 40 for me. Most weeks I do more like 20 for me and 100+ for her.
Some wider family members currently have covid. A little one and an adult. Really hoping that they are okay with it. The adult has had 3 jabs. Think the whole family will end up with it as not practical to self-isolate due to kids ages.
I've binned some boxes that had been cluttering up the hall and put the bins out. Progress.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Nice haul there! You could offer the bits you don't want back on Olio to see if someone else will have them.
Hope your relatives stay safe. We seem to have been lucky so far."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee5 -
Glad you are okay jwil - not sure I can offer the bits I don't want back as they are past their date (from TGTG).Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Red cabbage I'd probably cook English roast dinner style, make coleslaw or a quick microwave sauerkraut or pickle6

Good YS shopping.
The hallway is a transition space so can become cluttered easily. Well done for getting rid of the boxes. If you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them

You are a better mum than me.
I would not have driven my DS that distance on a regular basis both from a £££'s point of view & a physical point of view.
Even when he stayed here during part of uni he had to pay a amount towards gas & electric & so on.
Now he has his own financial commitments I think he finally gets it!I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. I love red cabbage - I buy a lot of pickled red cabbage to have with a salad (bit less calorific than coleslaw) and one of the relatives cooks red cabbage with sultanas. Its lovely and sweet, I just had a quick look on the 'net and there's a recipe with apple too. I'm going to have to give it a try soon. Seeing that cauli just got me wanting cauliflower cheese.
I think everyone is different with what they are willing and able to pay for their children. I know some 20/21 year olds who had to support their family at times during covid. When DD1 moved out I was able to top up her income to make sure she could afford to live reasonably comfortably. DD2 isn't paying much towards rent and food at home at all, but is saving for her own place in a few months time and will then live totally independently. Its not a case of giving exactly the same money, but making sure they are in roughly the same place i.e. they have enough money to survive while they are getting settled in work and growing their salaries to support themselves.
I've got to admit to driving a 150 mile round trip two or three times, and we've done a few 100 mile round trips. Its not great on a Monday morning. There are alternatives which I'm sure you've thought about e.g. DD getting a room share near work, so she could stay some weekends/travel up on Sundays. Mine did that to start with and its funny how getting the train home on a Saturday suddenly becomes much easier for themIts great they are working though, and I'm sure you will work it out.
