Windows Update not working.

Just throwing in a couple of suggestions that may help.
I'd always run the system file check with any such Windows problems as the first point of call:sfc /scannow
Then I'd run the following but it might not work if Windows Update isn't working because it uses it to restore any missing/corrupt files.DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
A great tool to fix the Windows Update permission problems is:
https://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html
It will do all the things you are trying to do above without faffing around on the command line. Just reboot in safe mode, run the tool as administrator and on the repair screen you can select to run the Windows Update repair suite only:

Thanks again. I will get to this shortly and let you know what happens0

Hi again,
Did all that. Got a different result this time. I also tried the recommendation from another user to run an app called tweaking.com Windows Repair. I noticed while it was running that there were access denied messages flashing up. When I ran the Windows Store reset module, the screen was filled with red error messages.0 -
I have found the problem - or at least I have now got the Microsoft Store working. The problem seemed to be associated with the Windows Update Medic Service, which I have got rid of.
If that is a silly move, please feel free to comment. Thanks again for all of your help.0 -
well done for persevering. I still think it might be malware.0

I would run adwarecleaner https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/ and malwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.com/

Well, you were probably right, although the fix that I did earlier did sort it out. Just for your reference, I ran a Malwarebytes scan and there were 5 threats which I quarantined. It seems to have come from a cryptocurrency site, but I couldn't say which. I do have an interest in crypto so I have probably clicked on it somewhere.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed their ideas. Very much appreciated.
