I go abroad a few time a year and as I understand EE will charge me £28 for using my phone before any charges.

What is the best way to avoid this?

Thanks

  • EE have everything on their own website, can only assume you're talking about 14 days as well @ £2 per day with the mention of the £28

Plusnet run on ee.  Their contracts still include roaming (at least for now).

Do you have to stay with the EE network? If so then BT mobile still include EU roaming.

O2 still offer EU roaming as do a few MVNO's such as ID Mobile (who use the Three network).

On the subject of roaming, I just had a conversation with EE about my contact and here's some info that might be of interest.

I looked on the EE website for info on roaming (because I'm due to travel to Spain next year) and I wanted to know what was going on post-Brexit. There's a useful page here: https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/roaming-and-international/using-your-device-abroad/what-impact-will-brexit-have-on-roaming - in case the link spontaneously stops working, here's the text too:

    EU ROAMING CHARGES AND CHANGES
Following Brexit, the way our network operates in the EU will be changing.

    Will these changes affect me?
For pay monthly handset and SIM customers:

If your plan started before 7 July 2021: If you're on a pay monthly plan and your contract started before 7 July 2021, these changes will not affect you.

If your plan started on or after 7 July 2021: If you take out a pay monthly handset or SIM plan from 7 July onwards, there will be a daily charge for using your phone in our European roaming zone (see list of destinations). However, we won't apply the new EU roaming charges until January 2022.
After seeing this, I called EE and asked, given that my contract started before 7 July 2021, does this mean, that, as long as I don't upgrade or change contract, that I keep getting EU roaming for free.

When the person replied to me and said "yes" you could hear the resignation in her voice, and she followed this up with (very quickly) "but if you do upgrade we have a great EU add on for £something a month.", "but if I don't upgrade, I still get it for free, right?", "Yes" she said in a resigned tone.

    Result !

To be honest, the plan I'm on is a pretty good deal (unlimited UK calls and texts, 6Gb UK data, £10.00pm, inc. VAT) so I have no intention of upgrading anytime soon.

The way I figure it, If I keep things as they are, buy my own phone and extra data as and when I need it, the EU roaming thing is well worth hanging onto.

I'm assuming that the reason that EE can't change the deal with EU roaming is because any contracts started before 7 July 2021, are still sacrosanct under EU law, despite the fact that we've now left. Is that right? Or is there another reason?

All good until the minimum period of your contract is over at which point EE may well let your contract continue on a rolling monthly basis. Or they may decide that your contract is no longer to be offered and will either swap you to a (non free roaming) contract or terminate service (it will be your choice).

Due the changes they introduce you should consider to switch to another provider that still including roaming or just pay the fees when you travel abroad if you still in a contract. If you are going to stay for long out of the country you may consider to get a local sim from where you are going to stay longer.
