Return bags rip-off?

We have weekly deliveries from one of the big supermarkets. Every single week, we are charged for more bags than we are given. Today, 12 items came in 6 bags and we were charged for 24 bags. We tell the driver who knocks the bags off the bill, or we do it online afterwards. It's maybe £1 per week but I wonder if all the supermarkets do it, and how much they make annually from these small amounts that I am sure go unnoticed by many online shoppers.

I suspect that in most cases, it's the driver dumping products into a smaller number of bags. Have had this with Iceland, ASDA, Morrisons but not from Ocado and Waitrose.

I didn't know that it was possible to claim whe this happens.

Ocado only gives money back on recycling of own bags now and will only take back max of 99 bags stuffed in one bag.

Not sure how the driver in the OPs situation could have used 24 bags for 12 items...

Most supermarkets don't use bags for home deliveries any more - it's impossible that 'all the supermarkets' are doing this!

That's the obvious money-saving solution - buy a few reusable ones and never worry about counting how many 10p's you're paying again.

I did my first online Morrisons delivery last week i stocked up on grog for Christmas I got 2x1litre bottles of Jim Beam 2 bottles of Advacaat and 1litre of Sherry all in one bag with tops sticking out of holes in 3 places I also got a packet of sausage in a separate bag and a packet of diced beef in another bag,the guy said careful with that one it may give way,I said which one the sausage but the sarcasm was lost on him he muttered something about next time return the bags and get a refund for them ? The bottles of grog barely made it into the kitchen before the bag disintegrated.
  • Mnoee which supermarkets don't use bags please? I do have bags for life but I can't give them to Morisons for my online order, obviously. It might only be 10p here and there but £1 a week is £52 a year - multiply that by the number of deliveries they do....I mean if it's even into the thousands and I suspect it's more....It's actually a good boost to their profits. So yes, I'd like to have a supermarket that doesn't use bags for home deliveries if you could let me know I'd be grateful. Glad the booze survived PLFRD

I use Tesco and haven't had bags for years, aside from peak pandemic times when they became mandatory. I think most other supermarkets at least give you the option of bagless, aside from Iceland who have a flat fee - I'm in NI where we don't have the same supermarket options so you'll have to Google for yourself!

I transfer the shopping from the crates to my bags for life. If you're elderly, disabled, isolating or otherwise unable to do this, most drivers are willing to do it for you.

Ocado allow you to adjust the number of bags to the actual amount received online after the delivery for a refund if necessary. If it is Morrisons on the Ocado platform I guess there is the same option.

No bags from Sainsbury's here either (or Asda or Tesco).

At least I assume that's the case, I don't think they're offered.  I haven't bought a bag from a supermarket since the charges came in years ago. I'm quite surprised that people on a mse site are still buying bags.

I generally put containers on the doorstep in advance and the delivery person starts unloading things into them if he gets to the door before I do. Otherwise we both pack things into my own containers together to speed things up. I have boxes for bottles of wine so they can be carried away safely.
