Amazon Not Taking Visa Credit Cards From Jan 19th 2022

  • I had the mail too but it was addressed personally rather than “Dear Customer” like the normal phishing scams. Mail came the morning after buying something too. Also I’ll just keep the card on there until & if it does stop working in Jan I’ll load another card. Would be annoying as that’s my cashback card but I am an infrequent Amazon shopper anyway.
  • Just got this too and did wonder if it was a scam (hence searching and finding this forum thread). Seems not though as Bloomberg are reporting it (can't post the link as a newbie but Google will find it easily).

Hopefully just a negotiating tactic - not that I buy a lot at Amazon anyway, but if this isn't sorted out I worry that it may start being the case at other stores too.

This may well blow up in Amazon's face. I'll be closing my account is this goes ahead and take my business elsewhere.
  • Genuine, apparently! I had the same email and went on a chat with an Amazon rep through the Amazon app on my phone. I wonder if Amazon are hoping to crowdsource complaints to Visa this way.

Just had the email (my wife too).  We only have Visa registered with Amazon.  We use these cards exclusively on Amazon as we don't want details leaked.  I agree with a previous poster that this is a warning shot fired from Amazon and most likely it will get resolved before the deadline of 19 January 2022.

About the potential scam, my wife has a link offering her £20 if she updates now,  where my email only says "Update your account now"- I scrutinised the link and it definitely takes you to the amazon page (where if offers 7 credit cards!) and says get £20 instantly when adding a Debit card , Mastercard or Amex.

And here I was thinking Amex were the most expensive cards ..

Ps. it's all over Bloomberg / Yahoo money / Reuters etc now.  Amazon have not yet commented,  Visa issued a statement about how sad they were that Amazon is limiting consumer choice.
  • Amex charge a higher merchant fee than visa credit cards so it all about volume of sales that Amazon take on visa credit card ...its deffo imho a warning shot and negotiating tactic on Amazons part .

Just removed my alternative non-Visa credit card from my account.
I suppose I should really be thanking Amazon for saving me money!
I can always buy elsewhere :) and should be supporting local businesses.
  • I too have received the same email and initially assumed it was a scam but there is a banner on the top right of the Amazon site saying "19 Jan: Visa Credit not Accepted".

  • Has no one considered this looks very much like a scam to get you to follow the links and update with a new payment method....Direct to the scammer? Does anyone seriously believe Amazon will no longer sell anything to the tens of millions of customers with Visa credit cards?
I got the email this morning and it's now in my spam.
Checked with AMAZON and they confirm that the Email is genuine!!
    On Amazon chat!!

The OP didn't mention an email but said that it was a pop up when already on the Amazon site and going to pay for something.  So not a scam in that instance.

As for the emails I never click on links but separately to a site for confirmation.  The emails I've been getting are saying that I'm about to be charged for not using PayPal in the last year.  In fact I think I've only used it once when I set it up for a specific purchase about 6 years back.  So I'll be ignoring that one too.
