Had a letter from him (not a solicitors letter) last Friday basically repeating what he had said in the previous text message. I ignored. I then had a text yesterday saying as I hadn't responded he was going legal today.

Hold your nerve.  As above he's still trying it on.

    Persistent, isn't he?

But you must be more persistent in completely ignoring him!

That is actually quite good, as if he "went legal" yesterday then any Solicitor will either have explained the futility of the case to the purchaser of the vehicle and you will hear no more, or the Solicitor will write you a letter which you can expect to receive in a timely fashion and then allows you to put the whole thing to bed.

In the highly unlikely event of receiving a letter from a Solicitor, you probably already know how to respond but should not second-guess what might be written until it is written.

In the mean-time, as you have been advised that the buyer is "going legal", you are absolutely correct to make no response and only respond via the Solicitor at the appropriate time.

Even if he does go legal, he won't be able to reclaim his solicitor costs in the small claims track anyway. ;)

Maybe the purchaser thinks that the letter last Friday was an LBA and therefore "going legal" will be registering the claim at small claims.  It is possible there won't be any Solicitor involved.  Is that (Solicitor) purely inferred from previous comments by the buyer as reported by the OP?
