Sky q box with no dish

We are about to move house but I doubt we could get the dish up in a suitable place at the new house. We have a few months left on our sky contract so would probably still use the sky q box with no dish. I know the live channels would be lost but stuff like Netflix and YouTube would still be OK. Not sure about stuff like the box sets, catch up services and stuff in the on demand section etc. When we go for this stuff it says "downloading" so am I right to assume this is all done over WiFi with no need for a signal from the dish?
To put it simply... What do we lose by not having a dish signal?
Sky glass might be an option in the future but that's months (years?) away as an option for us

I thought that "catchup" came via the internet ?
    ie) Independant of satellite connection
It does, although as you can see from the last page of to and fo the box would be "semi-dumb" with no way of getting live TV pictures, in my mind whats the point of paying for Sky in that scenario (assuming they even let you use the box this way for a prolonged period, something nobody on here has established)
  • Thanks for the comments. Well, we are in our new house. We do seem to have everything on the Q box apart from live TV. For how long, dunno.

Have you told Sky you have moved address as per the Sky Q terms?

Yes I have. I'm quite happy to keep paying sky for my "limited" service for the remainder of my contract. Using sky for catch up, on demand, Netflix etc.
90% of what we watch on live tv is on Freeview anyway

Seems sensible not to put a dish up for that length of time. Then, when you give the box back to Sky, there's no unsightly holes in the wall after you've disposed of the dish.
It'll be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end....

Your call.  I watch a lot of sport and watching that on catch up certainly isnt an option.

I do find it amusing, your insistence that because you watch sport there can be no possible need for anybody else to continue to pay for Sky and not have access to the live feed via satellite.

Anyway, bad news for our friend RickyRoma who asked this question in the first place. A Sky Q box will stop working after a short while (may be a few days or a week or two) as it requires an authorisation signal every so often, and that auth signal can't come via your internet feed. So bad news for you Ricky, your box will work for a while but then it won't unless you pop round for tea at a friend's house and connect it up there for a while. I understand there are other 'unauthorised' workarounds but I haven't gone into them and neither would I even suggest trying to find out what they might be

Good news though for those who insisted that this was what would happen without really having an idea why; not only are you right but you can gloat about being right, which obviously must take priority over poor old Ricky not being able to use his box after an initial period of it being ok. :)

Didn't I already state that in the very first reply to the OP. There's nothing to gloat about, we simply gave the correct information to the OP as requested.

Not as such. You said only the apps would work, but in fact any existing recordings can also be played. Further responses from others about whether it would continue to work or not were no more than guesswork.

You were also a bit vague about the need for a dish, claiming only that it checked its connection. That didn't sound convincing to me; it's not its connection that matters it's the authorisation signal that it needs.

The only thing you'd be able to use is the various apps, such as Netflix, Youtube, etc. You'll have no access to live channels or recordings. Eventually you won't be able to use the box at all as it regularly checks it's connection to the satellite dish and if not connected will stop operating.

    Indeed. Some bizarre postings.
