I wouldn't trust anything that one of those on-street sales reps tell you.
I bet the sales reps didnt tell you about the programmes you wouldnt be able to watch on catch up either, or the fact you have to sit there through all the ads on any ITV catch up programme, or the fact in 12 months you have to pay an extra fiver a month to fast forward the adverts.
    Blimey. Sorry I spoke.
  • Just pointint out they are only going to tell you what you want to hear, as it stands Sky Glass is absolute pants and anyone swapping their dish for it is mental.

It was a simple statement of fact question. I suppose I could become one of those people who avoids decision making and thought processing by assuming everyone is a liar, but that sort of attitude doesn't appeal tbh.

Sky Glass wasn't mentioned and fwiw I have no desire to go down that path. The Sky Q box works well as a PVR & time shifter so we'll stick with that for the foreseeable thanks.

    I couldn't agree more.

We moved recently and I can tell you the SkyQ box doe NOT work without a dish with the new Q type of LNB on it.   Sky came two days after we moved, changed the LNB and all worked, no extension or price increase to our contract.
We left them a month later as the BB was useless and went to Virgin.

Hardly a surprise, that the box doesn't work without the correct input devices attached.

Anyway, I just tried out OP's original question and can report that the Sky Q box works just fine without a satellite connection. It starts up, it reports 'No Satellite' and obviously can't show the preview in the Home screen or any live tv that's delivered via satellite but existing recordings play back just fine and more importantly the catch-up services for BBC, ITV and Sky all allowed me to initiate and watch downloads that didn't exist before the sat leads were disconnected. I presume the other catch-ups will work just fine too (C4, UK Play etc) but I couldn't be bothered to check all of them tbh.

I would have two questions based on that though:

    a) how long would Sky allow that arrangement to continue, would they be bothered or not?
    b) Whats the real point of paying Sky for Sky when you cant get live TV, I certainly wouldnt see a point in doing so.

For now. Try keeping this arrangement for a number of days/weeks and see what happens.

    a) No idea, but why would they care as long as the bill continues to be paid? I see no issue from their PoV with someone paying for a service but opting not to use it.

    b) As an interim measure maybe, or because the punter may have been with Sky long enough to be a VIP cusotmer that brings some additional benefits and doesn't wish to lose them. Or maybe they've done what everyone should do and end up talking to Sky Retentions negotiating a decent discount under threat of 'leaving', and doesn't wish to lose that discount for the sake of a couple of months not receiving the service. I'm sure that for every 100 Sky customers who resent paying, there are one or two who consider the Sky bill as buttons in the scheme of things and pay it for the convenience of it being there when needed. Or maybe they're MPs and it's an allowed expense on the 3rd residence. Maybe.

b [2]) You can still watch Sky programming on Catch-up if not live. We know that linear viewing has been falling away for years and that watching progs that have already been on but at a more convenient time is very much the norm these days.
  • A reminder to the OP though if he is planning on using the box as an "offline" box:
