EV cost per mile?

It's only ever going to be a per mile rate. The jury is out on whether that would be a flat rate, or linked to a scale based on time of day, in an attempt to reduce congestion at peak hours.Herzlos said:Flight3287462 said:Just remember at some point the government are going to come looking for the £30-£35bn they will be losing from VED, Fuel Duty and VAT.
So make the most of it just now it won't last.
What makes you think that'll only apply to EV's? It's not viable to determine if the electricity used in a house is going to a car or not, so the only ways to compensate for the fuel duty loss would be a flat rate on all cars or a per mile rate on all cars. ICE cars will likely take the same hit but still have to pay 4x as much for the fuel.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Per mile rate is going to be a lot harder to calculate reliably - you can use the MOT figure but most can be clocked, or you can use a GPS tracker which will result in huge expense and outrage.
Or you can just stick a flat annual tax of £1000/vehicle on it and voila, revenue.

With our previous car, 16 year old diesel, yes it was cheaper to run and tax than our new electric car on a lease. However we like the peace of mind that comes with the all inclusive monthly payment, no unexpected large bills, and no time commitment for us to fix it. So we decided that with the environment benefits along with the fact that it is still affordable, was why we made the switch to electric last year.Grumpy_chap said:
I understand the logic of that, but think there are a fair number of "bangernomics" drivers with a long commute.BOWFER said:
Banger drivers surely aren't long distance drivers,
Up until COVID I was doing 70 mile each way commute in a 2007 145k mile Focus. When doing that level of commute (30k miles per year) without a company car, the options are either to go for something where depreciation is zilch or go for a high monthly cost (whether lease, PCP or straightforward depreciation). I accepted maintenance charges of up to £1,200 per year as that was still less than 3 or 4 months of a standard PCP and much lower than a PCP with that sort of mileage allowed for.
We'd always run bangers before (and classics , not sure at what age a banger becomes a classic...?) and fully intend to get our Moggy back up and running at some point along with an EV, but might even go with an EV conversion for that 🙂0
