[rant] single journey fares are like a rip off that I start to think about getting a car

You might want/need to travel at short notice generally speaking, but can't see why you'd want to go from Birmingham to Newcastle (quote a long way) on a whim. It's the type of thing you'd plan. If you must see a show or go shopping at short notice you can do that in Birmingham no?Herzlos said:TheAble said:Birmingham to Newcastle isn't the sort of journey you'd need to make at short notice anyway. Plenty of time to book in advance and get a decent rate. London to Manchester is another one of these oft-quoted expensive fares but why would you need to make that journey at short notice either?
Why would anyone travel anywhere at short notice?
Maybe they've got a day off and want to visit friends? Go to see a show, shopping, whatever?0 -
Not everyone has the ability to plan things far in advance, due to either work rotas, self employment etc.TheAble said:

Why shouldn't someone be able to travel between 2 arbitrary cities on a whim? It works fine in most of the rest of the world.

No one's prevented from travelling between any cities on whim... but *generally speaking* long distance train travel tends not to be planned on the day, so when looking at relative costs, ticket prices etc... standard open return costs aren't particularly reflective of the actual cost that you have to pay. They *are* useful when looking at everyday short distance trips.

Yeah, the folk who are trying to travel with no notice are usually the captive market (business travel, emergency etc) and so get completely screwed.

Taxi service also helps the public to reach their destinations. Taxi service is one of the major parts of public transport, a large number of people used taxis to visit their destinations.0
