This sounds like the first, tentative step toward surge pricing. It will be interesting to see in the future what will happen to those who refuse to use a smart meter or those who do not agree to reading submissions every thirty minutes.

Can someone in the know comment whether this is potentially possible?

As long as the war continues this trend will also continue.

Cornwall insights have already made two upward jumps in their predictions for the October price cap and Ofgem wince their £2800 price capped announcement have been suspiciously quiet.

There must come a point where the government will have to intervene further. It’s all fine and well saying this is what the cost of energy is, but millions, even middle income earners, are not going to be able to pay their bills.

It seems to me that the April increase hasn’t really been felt due to summer months and reduced energy usage, when this increase comes in October, as heating is starting to be needed, there is going to be an almighty reckoning.

Some won't even notice that for 6 months after winter starts if their energy company issues 6 monthly reviews..... then bang 4 figure debit on their accounts.

I would suggest that there has been enough media coverage, help for October given for people to make choices and research energy saving as to not make this winter as bad as it could have been.

For those that have closed their eyes and ignored it all well they are in for quite the shock.

However if the rises continue into next year in the summer and autumn then yes more help will be needed for "all"

If the cap rises as far as £4k this October ,the Government are going to have to dig very deep - otherwise 100,000s of households will default on their bills and cancel DDs - no way are the companies going to be able to put all on to PAYG.

    Why not?

Yes it will be a problem for people on non smart meters, but my understanding for smart meters is that they are the same for prepaid and credit, so it would just be a software change and sending the information how to load the meter.

Looking at news from Germany and the concern that Nord Stream 1 will not be switched back on after the maintenance starting next week, I would not be surprised about further gas price increases when Germany tries to get more gas for example from Norway.

I hope we won't get to cap higher than the currently predicted one of £2800 to £3150 (three different sources), but where can should the money come from for further help, and even more important for me, if the prices stay high what is going to happen next year?

I think it would be politically unacceptable if we end up in a situation whereby 10s of thousands of households are cut off via smart meter for non payment of (unaffordable) bills.

What the answer is, if the cap heads ever further upwards, I have no idea...but it won't be pretty ☹️
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)
