Octopus have been pushing this to the max and it's not the simple equation they make it out to be. For starters, existing businesses have no ability to move, so who exactly benefits? 

Just before Xmas there was a huge row over locational or zonal pricing in Norway and Sweden because the electricity was sold off to neighbouring Germany via interconnectors during their 'dunkelflaut' [no wind] for more profit  while locals in the generating area paid much higher prices. 

There's a massive (and noisy) lobbying effort going on by various 'interested parties' right now. As I've said before, our energy market needs reform but probably not like this. It's a very dog-eat-dog world in the energy markets and the consumer is at the bottom of the pile.

Rates and standing charges vary for gas depending what zone you are in so why not electric too ?

When the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine, zonal electricity prices will be hiked dramatically to make electricity too expensive for you to use.

As the article admits, instead of building enough power stations and grid capacity to meet everyone's energy needs, you'll have to organise your life and do as you're told to suit the suppliers' shortcomings.  The servants want to become the masters.

I've been saying this for yonks (it's all part of Demand Side Response) but the industry shills always shoot me down and shout 'scaremonger' !
