Blackouts less likely this winter says National Grid
There is a lower risk of electricity blackouts this winter compared to last, according to National Grid, thanks to increased generation and the ability to manage demand.
This year the UK was "in a different position", it said in a report.
Chances of the lights going out were almost back to where they were before the energy crisis, it said.
But a scheme to pay people for cutting electricity use at peak times will still be used to help manage demand.

Households could be paid to turn down heating
UK households could be paid to turn down their heating this winter under plans to prevent gas supply issues.
National Gas, which runs the UK's main gas network, is mulling the idea after homes got discounts for using less electricity under a separate scheme.
It told the BBC there was "no threat to domestic supplies" but it was ready to take action if they became strained.

Not sure if you follow the news but gas supplies became pretty unreliable last year which is one of the reasons the prices went up so much...

Electricity theft at record levels in England and Wales - BBC analysis
Cannabis farms, cryptocurrency mines and the cost-of-living crisis are being blamed for record levels of electricity thefts in England and Wales.
BBC analysis found rates of such thefts had risen by 75% since 2012, passing 3,500 offences for the first time in 2021-22.
At least 10 police force areas saw a doubling in the crime, which can be deadly, over the past decade.
The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said it was "a growing problem".

Winter fuel allowance could be removed for most pensioners to pay for triple lock
Rishi Sunak is considering scaling back help to pay for heating bills to pay for maintaining the pension triple lock.
Rishi Sunak is considering removing the winter fuel allowance from all but the poorest pensioners as a way of clawing back some taxpayer funds from the elderly as he prepares to fight the next election on a pledge to keep the pension triple lock despite its spiralling costs.

... presumably 'poorest pensioners' = on pension credit + 17 benefits and allowances.2 -
I actually know quite a few pensioners who, although not wealthy, have enough to get by on and if they had the option to opt out of receiving extra payments probably would. I also know other pensioners who only just manage to get by on their pension (mainly because they rent) and would benefit from extra cash but would probably be reluctant to accept it even though I'm confident the majority here would prefer to see them do that then go cold.Funny old world we live in....2
