    Ovo's 10-point plan at a glance

    Medium-term plans
    • Abolish the standing charge that customers pay
  • Octopus Energy boss Greg Jackson said that many customers cannot understand why standing charges, the part of a bill you pay regardless of how much energy you use, are so high.

Greg Jackson again going for PR rather than anything useful.

Someone should tell him that many customers don’t actually understand (or seemingly care) about most things related to their energy use and whinging about 20p a day is one of the more useless things to be doing.

How about helping people save 1 unit a day for twice the benefit?

Won't it cost more to buy all the candles than run some LED bulbs? (and the chance of burning down the pub has increased...)

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/sep/27/romantic-isnt-it-cornish-pub-cuts-energy-costs-with-candlelight-nights

Not a scene from a Thomas Hardy story or, given that this is north Cornwall, a Poldark romance, but autumn 2022 in the Masons Arms, Camelford, where soaring electricity bills have prompted the landlady and the landlord, Katy Chawner-Woods and Alan Woods, to turn the lights off and illuminate the place with hundreds of candles.

    ...

Chawner-Woods says the idea came after she opened the August electricity bill – £2,574, compared with £1,172 for the same time last year. “I was having a moan and one of the locals said: ‘You should go back to how it was when the pub opened in 1753.’”

So they headed to Ikea, filled their car up with candles and launched candlelight Mondays. “We could have cut our menus or opening hours but thought it worth trying something different. And it seems to be working. People are telling us how it feels like a proper old cosy pub. It seems to change how people behave a bit. You don’t see so many people on their mobiles. Everyone is enjoying chatting to one another by candlelight.”

It might cost more but if it gets more people through the door and buying food & drink thanks to its Olde Worlde charm, it's likely to pay for itself and then some.
That's not really why I'm posting in this thread. I thought regulars might like to know that someone has blown up both Nord Stream pipelines under the Baltic Sea:
"Gas is pouring into the Baltic Sea from three separate leaks on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines amid claims by seismologists in Sweden and Denmark of two sharp spikes in undersea activity, possibly indicating explosions, and speculation about sabotage.  A seismograph on the Danish island of Bornholm, near where the leaks occurred, twice recorded spikes on Monday, the day on which the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines underwent dramatic falls in pressure, the German geological research centre GFZ said.  A Danish military flight over the leaks brought back striking images from the ruptures, including one showing an area of bubbling gas a kilometre wide on the sea’s surface."

... and as you might imagine, the markets were spooked. This is gas for October delivery (the rest of the winter only rose by 15-20%, but was higher to begin with).

Doesn't Russia lose its leverage by blowing up the pipelines?  False flag?
    I think....

  • Biden: "If Russia invades...then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it." Reporter: "But how will you do that, exactly, since...the project is in Germany's control?" Biden: "I promise you, we will be able to do that."
