alfmurph said:Let me say right up front this post is asking how we can keep our house inheritance and avoid care home fee's .
@almurph was plainly asking how he could cheat the system which is designed to ensure that those with the means, like his father, pay for care.4 -
OP duly chastised then, rightly so but perhaps this thread should be pinned as a warning to anyone in the future who harbours similar ideas.
That said, repeatedly seeing fees pluralised as fee's was doing my head in. At least it didn't all start with So, which was a minor blessing.6 -

Someone suggested hiring the house out myself and using this to help care home costs but i would need to bring house up to a certain standard for this .
Could someone tell me what this means please - is it just fire alarms and carbon dioxide alarms or is it more major .
I showed your comments to my sister who is shocked , embarrasted and appalled . She still says dad is not going into a home .
Her husband and her work different shifts , have 2 dogs and they babysit their grandkids when off work .It will not work but she ain't listening .
Thanks for being interested enough to post although you did shock me somewhat .0 -
I don't know how the CHIPS scheme works, but
the rental income from a £120K house would barely scratch the surface of typical nursing home costs.1 -
The OP was quite blatant about wanting to avoid care home fees, so will have to take all responses on board. My father paid his own fees. He had too much pride to expect anyone else to pay for him, as did my sisters and I.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)1 -
What other income does your Dad have, OP? In the event of needing care, your Dad might not burn through his funds as quickly as you might initially think.
My mum is in residential care and I draw only £1500 each month from her savings to 'make up' her care home costs. The other funds come from a variety of pensions and attendance allowance. With a pot of 170K, there could be plenty to keep dad going for some years to come. With some good financial advice there is the option of growing the capital a little which will make the pot stretch that little bit further.
If you were to keep the house do you potentially double your work? Do you have time to visit Dad in a care setting, and to maintain the house? Even if rented there will be things needing to be done.
