Thanks I just want the lowest priced per kilo
I bumped into our local coal  merchant this afternoon and asked him that very question for you.

He told me the cheapest, and so lowest grade, coal he currently sells is 24p/kilo based on a minimum half tonne order, delivered in open sacks.

    Hope that helps :)

I would love to buy at 24p per kilo

can you give a number to order from?
Sorry, I don't know their phone number as it's just our local merchant we often see around here.

Anyway, as I said, it is open sack delivery, so local delivery only. You seem to be over 100 miles away in the smoke.

Well, I call it "the smoke", but isn't that all a smoke control area now? If so, you couldn't use that coal anyway. See post#2 above by me for more advice.

What have people found the best smokeless coal to use, looking mainly for heat and duration.

    Kind regards

I use the ‘Brazier’ brand from The Range,or Home Bargains.£3.99 per 10 kg. Up until last year I was using bituminous coal, but of course that is being phased out. I still have some, which I am burning along with the smokeless, until it’s gone. I can get smokeless from the local merchant, but it’s dearer ( it does have to be delivered!),and I pass the above shops everyday anyway. I find the brazier burns hotter, holds well, and there is low ash.

Trying sample bags is really the only way to go.

Unfortunately it's not a case of which is the best,  my experience with Brazier was disappointing yet mumf a few posts up is pleased with it , too many variables.

    ...
Some information on smokeless alternatives already given in this very recent thread started by jblakes:

    :)
  • I use Brazier in my stove and find it quite good as long as it has had chance to dry out first. I always leave a coal bucket full drying on my hearth when the stove is on.

Recently I have started using New Flame (when B&M stopped Brazier for a bit) and I have to say I prefer this. New Flame is a slightly bigger size compared to Brazier and seems to last longer. B&M are back selling Brazier but Asda sell New Flame for £4 for a 10kg bag.

I buy Blaze from B&M (£3.99 for 10KG). I started buying from B&M when my coal merchant went from 2 to 3 open sacks minimum order. It was only then that I realised this works out cheaper than my local coal merchant charges (about £4 per 50KG cheaper)

  • I would rather pay my local coal merchant to deliver it than cart it home from the shops; plus I find b&m fuel to be soaking wet most times so refuse to buy from there now
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

I only light my stove when it's really cold so just buy 2 bags every couple of weeks and it's no trouble. If it's been raining I'll remove a layer from the top and get 2 of the dry bags from below. It all goes in my bunker on top of the existing coal where it would dry out anyway. I fill my bucket from the bottom of the bunker. I refuse to use my coal merchant where the price is more expensive and since they changed their minimum delivery to 3 x 50KG open sacks and, more often than not, their coal is soaking wet too.
