I am on transfer/hold to new installations with Shell. I have been listening to Shell music for 30 minutes now but I will have to go out shortly to meet the bus with our child on it!    Is Scottish Power  SSE ? If it is I should have put it on the list!

No, SSE (now part of Ovo) is different to Scottish Power (who are Spanish!).
  • I'd suggest that this story is worthy of being reported in the media, this is a crazy situation that shouldn't exist.
If you can't get anywhere it might be worth involving one or more news organisations and/or Ofgem.

Just to clarify something here, are energy suppliers obliged to connect up a supply point and or metering equipment?,if not basically you can then be denied supply without recourse, surely that's not the case,is it?.
  • I don't like them as they are a complicated company but would Utility Warehouse be taking on new customers?
  • Are all newbuild houses from 2021 onwards going to be lit by candles and heated by coal?
The system has fundamentally failed.  Basically the suppliers are on strike in protest at the price cap.

Much work for Ofgem to sort after this farce, the cap needs looking at during times of high energy wholesale prices. I don't mean for those on the tariff but those who are jumping to it, I can see why the energy suppliers are starting to feel this cap only works one way.

They were hammered when they put people onto their standard tariff at end of fixed contract (hence cap introduction) but now everyone wants to get onto it, and the moment it starts to increase or better fixed deals come along they will be just as quick to jump off it.
The main purpose of the cap was to stop those being taken advantage of as they either do not switch often or just forget when their fix deals end, now it's the go to tariff being the cheapest at the suppliers expense.

I don't see why some rules cannot be built in so that new connections need to stay on a fixed / new connection tariff for a minimum period before moving to a price cap tariff.
Also existing customers can only move to the capped tariff at end of contract, not chose to switch to it, so it is seen more of a backstop tariff rather than openly available to all.

There will I am sure be a rethink, because ultimately longer term we will all be picking up the tab for these extra costs now facing suppliers, if we are only left with half dozen suppliers they are going to set the prices going forward so they are able to get back in profit with good margins.

After a further 2..5 hours this morning I spoke to a very helpful lady in Shell Energy and I believe I am now sorted with the three new flats. There will be 4 flats at the end but I am using the supply that was to the shop (designated SSE Business) for this flat.
I can't change this to "Domestic" until the property is moved off the Local Authority Business premises Database.  The only way of doing this is through the District Valuation system (Gov.UK) and reporting an error in their system.  Not holding my breath with this at this time!
Thanks for your comments and interest. I believe the regulator will step in and things will get easier after time passes. As people say, this must be an issue for any builder at the moment. Thanks again.

You should be able to quickly (should!!) sort the business address by a simple phone call to the local council.

Very few, if any, suppliers are currently "offering" the capped tariff to all and sundry and the vast majority are  ending up on it by default - it is just that the default is now by choice rather than omission.

My Council (Cardiff City) said they could not help/do it. That the only way was The Valuation Office amendment.
