    You can claim by post, although this delays the start of your claim (to presumably the date they receive the initial information form).

    There is apparently a pilot to make some claims online.  You could request that in your letter.  Or, this page has a DWP e-mail address - again for a paper form, but quicker by post, and you could also request an online claim.  Can't hurt to ask!

    Thanks - is that not just Scotland though?

    No, it's definitely for PIP, not the new Scottish benefit.  Rightsnet has a thread with people seeing them from various parts of England https://www.rightsnet.org.uk/forums/viewthread/17415/

    Thats just the PIP2 form - from what I gather - still need to phone for initial application / PIP1 ??

    23 weeks is the current clearance time for new claims - that is absolutely appalling isnt it ?

    Yes it's just the PIP2 form, but as in my previous comment you can ask for the PIP1 by post or possibly e-mail.

    The e-mail address on the page I linked looked very much like a DWP address, not a local council address.

    Update: came across this https://www.gov.uk/government/news/goodbye-gsi-dwp-email-addresses-are-changing

    "From 28 March 2019 if you use any existing DWP email addresses, you will need to change these from:

    @dwp.gsi.gov.uk

    to

    @dwp.gov.uk"

    So if you did try the e-mail address, you'd have to change the suffix.

    Also on a Benefits and Work thread one of the moderators pointed out that e-mail is not a secure method which is why there isn't one for communicating with DWP - I guess that's why online portals are used elsewhere, because they can be secured.

    (As for equality, DWP do already give textphone and Relay options on their page.)

    Okay, edit, maybe they do offer some form of e-mail contact (security implied by 'set it up for [the claimant]') https://forum.scope.org.uk/discussion/comment/127964/#Comment_127964  Again you'd have to take out the .gsi in the address given.

  • So is this method - "download, fill in and email back" or is it "a portal that you have to log in to and fill in on-line" ?
    I have emailed   oed.customeraccessibilityteam@dwp.gov.uk to ask them
    I will post back here when I find out more .....

    It's an online portal and you log in and fill it online. You can save your progress and return to it when you wish. Evidence is sent through this too i believe.
    You do not get a choice whether you can apply this way, you get asked. There's currently a maximum of 2,500 people per week that can claim this way. When you think of how many people apply, that's actually a very small amount of people being offered the pilot.

    OK so how do I register to get asked to use this method?

    I used to have a text phone - but gave up trying to use it a few years ago - when I found that increasing numbers of companies were refusing to communicate via text - such as Scottish power

    You can't ask to use this online feature. When you apply for PIP if you're one of the 2500 per week then you will be asked if you would like to apply online or to receive the usual form in the post. If you can't use the phone to start your claim then you'll need to apply by post. I've never heard of anyone starting a claim through email.
