I believe that becoming a £2 per month donor to a charity will set you up for an avalanche of "supporter" correspondence, much of which will be focused on getting to increase your measly donation. Just a thought.

Pretty much any regular donation, however small or large, will result in a bombardment of e-mails band/or post asking you to give more. Once a charity has your contact details, that's it. They're always after more. Oh. and the same is true of political donations.

Under GDPR they can only use your details for what you agree to - and it should be possible to opt out of all contact if you wish and can navigate their tick boxes.  I have a monthly donation to MSF and no contact at all.

Indeed - that's why doorstep/high street chuggers try to get you to sign up for a tiny amount eg £1 a month, which would take several years or even decades for the charity to just to recoup the fees the chuggers get never mind admin etc. The idea is to identify people who have an interest in whatever the cause so they can bombard them with bleeding heart messages and adverts to get more, and the TPS/MPS won't help as you have a relationship with them already.

This just happened to me. I pay £12 a month to a charity, but did not give consent for them to give (sell?) my details onto other charities, and now receive said barrage of post. I complained, they cancelled my consent for postal/email/telephone communications, but if I receive any further comms I'll be cancelling the DD too.

  • I am struggling to find any organisation that currently has a £1 donation allowed by DD.
They all seem to have switched to PER WEEK!
Hope everyone monitors what they're signed up for!
The only one I've found so far is PDSA which accepts £1 per month on  DD.
I'd happily give more but can't afford to.
Anyone got any up to date DD's going out for £1 per MONTH ?
    Thanks

I've got 3 x £2 direct debits set up. SSPCA, Alzheimers Scotland and breast cancer now. Also got a local hospice DD as part of their lottery money raising thing.

Not a charity- but you can set up a DD to Park for their Christmas 'club'.
I pay around £1.70 pm and at the end of their collecting period- 11 or 12 months get 2 x M&S £10 gift cards posted to me. (there are no admin charges.)
Maybe you could choose just one £10 card?
I have just started 'saving' for next year! That has been one easy DD but not covered by financial services.

  • Why the need to have a bunch of £1 DD's? Is this to access a bank account bonus or something?

Why the need to have a bunch of £1 DD's? Is this to access a bank account bonus or something?

Account switch bonuses often require direct debits to be switched to qualify for the bonus, Santander and Nationwide current switch offers being an example. Other reasons are ongoing rewards such as NatWest/RBS Rewards or Barclays Blue Rewards schemes.

The easiest way to get a direct debit without actually spending is to take out a Post Office savings account (ignoring their appalling customer servie/flaky website) as they take deposits via direct debit. Unfortunately they, like many others before them, are removing this facility as of March 2022, hence all the posts about how else to generate direct debits to enable receipt of switch bonuses or ongoing rewards.

You can set up 2 direct debits via this method?  Have there ever been any examples of banks refusing to pay out switch bonuses if the DD's are from there, because surely it's obvious?
