I thought chevrons are only to demarcate lanes going in the same direction?[Deleted User] said:Reading the relevant legislation [The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002, Schedule 6], it seems that the road markings are incorrect, and should have chevrons instead of diagonal lines.1 -
I think you're right, in which case there doesn't seem to be any legal basis at all for the markings in the OP's example.user1977 said:

Indeed it does, and it makes perfectly clear that Rule 130 applies to both. "Rule 130. Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road".prowla said:Here's a picture from the HC showing solid white lines with chevrons between, so the HC does know the difference between "chevrons" and "diagonal stripes".When you say it makes it "perfectly clear"; do you mean that it is OK to turn right there or that it is not? What 130 says is that "These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right." and the second point says "If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency.".130Therefore the white diagonal stripes are there to protect cars turning right, which they are perfectly entitled to do, as there are no chevrons.
Areas of white diagonal stripes or chevrons painted on the road. These are to separate traffic lanes or to protect traffic turning right.- If the area is bordered by a broken white line, you should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so.
- If the area is marked with chevrons and bordered by solid white lines you MUST NOT enter it except in an emergency.

The cars turning right are not supposed to drive on the white hatched/chevroned areas, but those areas are desighed to give right-turners space/protection.0
