Can I Move the Free Tax Renewal Date?
Comments

The extra days in the year may help them catch up.

Sorry but I am at a loss as to why you want to move the date given the renewal cost is 0, it takes seconds to renew the VED online so whilst you are relaxed in the armchair with a glass pf port following Christmas dinner log on to DVLA and renew the VED simples.1

The OP said he is busy at that time of year as it Christmas.Robbo66 said:Sorry but I am at a loss as to why you want to move the date given the renewal cost is 0, it takes seconds to renew the VED online so whilst you are relaxed in the armchair with a glass pf port following Christmas dinner log on to DVLA and renew the VED simples.
Hang on, do you think the OP is Father Christmas????
BTW I've been very good this year OP4 -
FYI, DVLA said:A V11 tax reminder should arrive 1-3 weeks before the tax is due.
You should tax before it expires, however you won't be committing an offence if you tax or SORN within 14 days of the date of expiry.
You must keep your vehicle off the road during this time.
So it seems I have a 14 day grace period, providing it's kept off the road.0 -
But you'd need to SORN it and then keep it off the road until at least Feb 1st* before taxing it - could you?
* VED is calculated monthly ... if you went to tax it mid-way through January then you'd be no further forward as it would still expire on 31st Dec.
An alternative ... given that VED for you is £0, do you have the option to tax it for 6 months and then tax it again (for 12 months) near the end of June? This won't help you for this upcoming renewal, but would resolve the issue thereafter.
That said, I agree that you seem to be making a mountain out of a molehill - taxing online takes seconds and can be done prior to 31st Dec, so any time between Christmas and New Year.Jenni x0 -
The real question is; will you, and does 14 days really make that much of a difference to you, given what everyone has said that it will literally take seconds to renew at the correct time?anotheruser said:FYI, DVLA said:A V11 tax reminder should arrive 1-3 weeks before the tax is due.

I don't think it's possible to 'buy' 6 months of tax for a nil rated vehicle.Jenni_D said:But you'd need to SORN it and then keep it off the road until at least Feb 1st* before taxing it - could you?

It is, however, possible to renew early. Although they warn you that you will lose the remaining months of the previously paid for period, the loss would be nil.1 -
SORN it or set up a reminder via tax web site. I get one in the post every year and just pay it online. Takes minutes.0

Reminder arrives beginning December, takes less time to renew online than to create this thread.4
