Bought a car late January.
Renewal of car tax is on the 1st of January... maybe it's the 31st.  I can't remember now but it's January anyway.

Can I move this date somehow, even though the tax due is free?
With Christmas and stuff, I'd prefer it to be at another date in the year, even if it's just a month later in February.

I understand I can renew it "up to two months early" but I'd rather it be a month later so it renews with my insurance.

The only way you can do it is by paying it early, you won't be able to legitimately pay it later without taking it off the road and SORNing it. If, for example you do it now then your next renewal will be 1/10/22

Why move it if it is free? if you want it the same as your insurance so you do not forget it ,you get a reminder from the Gov that it is due.

I'm not even sure if you can renew early without creating a reason first. The obvious reasons would be changed RK, or SORN then re-tax.

You can but has to be a good reason.
What "good" is in the eyes of the DVLA is a mystery.

I wonder what would happen if it runs out on the 31st of February and it's on the drive, but I renew on the 1st of February.

Nothing stopping you from going to the Post Office to tax your car with your V5 at any time before it runs out, their system allows for it, they just mark it as an "overlap".

If you're within a month of it running out then the renewal date starts from the normal date, in your scenario it will run from 1st March.

As mentioned though, why is it such an issue, it's free, you get a reminder (usually) and it's a two minute job online.

I think it's possible to setup an automated direct debit to 'pay' it every year. You have to do it at the time of renewal.

Doesn't answer your question, but I tried to move from monthly payments back to an annual one, they said it wasn't possible for me to do this 2 months early. I had to wait until one minute past midnight on the final day otherwise I'd be charged twice for the previous month. Absolutely crazy - you could settle 2 months early if you're already on annual to annual payments, but not if your going monthly to annual!

Luckily, I'm up at 3am for work, so I did it then. But!. When I did this, the system said that my car was already taxed, and that I may be charged twice for the month.

You'd think they'd want it to be easy for you to give them all your tax money at once!
It'll be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end....

I'd wonder as well if it ran out on the 31st February, still the DVLA are very busy at the moment
