If that's correct then go for it.  In fact he can move into our house if he likes.
People have definitely sometimes been allowed to transfer their own tariff during a move but I think this is very much at the discretion of the energy company rather than a right.
Historically it was a way for a supplier to retain a customer, right now though there is considerably less incentive to retain a customer on an old cheap fix...
Never hurts to ask though, but I still say to verify the tariff as Octopus have been nowhere near 9p/kWh in the last 2 years.

Thanks all, maybe he's confused with the exact tariff and price per KwH I'll find out at some point but either way its way better than my new standard rate for EON. Found this...

    https://bigglesremovals.com/uk/utilities/moving-home-octopus-energy

"What’s nice about Octopus Energy is that, if you keep them on to supply your new home, they keep your current tariff and the debit amount the same as before for a while"

    https://octopus.energy/blog/moving-house-heres-what-you-need-know/

"Your tariff will stay the same, and so will your Direct Debit amount. Once we have a better idea of your usage at the new property we can help you decide if your monthly payment is right."

I guess given the situation they are less likely but if I'm pleasant to the person on the phone it's worth a shot. All they can say is no and he's moving out either way
  • Hi,
good luck, you would then have to cancel your EON contract, do you have an exit fee, though might still work out cheaper.

I don't have a contract with EON I had a fixed deal with Symbio but since they are bust I've been transferred by OFGEM's agreement so I'll be on standard price capped tariff and no exit fees. I was paying 12p looks like that is most likely going to jump to like 24p plus the extra daily standing charge.

I think what is being suggested is that the OP's parent moves in and becomes responsible for the energy account(s). Unless the parent's current supplier (Octopus) confirms that they will accept them as a customer at some tariff better than those of the incumbent supplier(s), this does not seem like a good idea. The parent will have to open an account with the incumbent supplier, in case of electricity this will be E.on Next, and then switch to their current supplier if this has been arranged in advance. The question also arises as to whether the parent is proposing to take over the gas account too. It would probably not be a good idea to have the electricity account and gas account in different names at the same property.

No gas at property, just electricity. Not sure why it would be any different to moving into a new house you just brought. Will give it a try and feedback hopefully before xmas. I was with Octopus a few years ago myself and I was so impressed with their customer service so I have high hopes and fingers crossed. I wish myself luck lol

Given it would be unviable for the supplier to keep your supply price going, they won't. The contract will end when you leave and give them final meter readings. You'll then need to sign up with where you are with the current supplier there and only when you have an account with them even consider changing suppliers, if in fact other suppliers are taking on new customers, no guarantee they may for a while.

There's probably no harm in trying it and seeing what happens.
No need to officially "move out" just yet, just get your dad to apply to move to your address at a future date and find out.
Good luck, if you can beat the system then it's worth a try.

Defo worth a try as my annual Kw per year is about 9,000kW  :o
