... and just for clarity, that photo is showing a reading of 26361
The numbers outlined in red are not to be included when you give the reading to your supplier.

250 unit (kWh) is about £10. (for gas)
True for kWhs at 4p, but the OP doesn't have a smart meter and it's unclear whether they have received a bill, checked an online account or already converted the figures shown on the meter from (hundreds of) ft3 or m3 to kWh.
At 4p/kWh and excluding the daily charge, 250m3 would work out at over £100 and 250(00) ft3 would be over £300.
Not saying that's what's happened here, just that if anyone thinks that they'll pay only a tenner if they see the volume reading of the gas meter on the wall increasing by 250 'units', they'll get a massive shock !
Edit: posted before I saw the photo of the meter, but still valid as a general rule.

There's your problem; your son missed the "3" from your reading. It should be 26361 not 26618.
With the correct reading your usage from 22/09 to 01/10 is 7 cubic metres, not 263 cubic metres.

You need to submit a correct reading today.  The system may not accept it as it is lower than the previous read in which case you will need to contact them to get it sorted.
