iPhone - no headphones socket

I need to upgrade my old iPhone SE soon. The newer ones don’t have a headphone socket. My car doesn’t have Bluetooth so I normally use a cable (I think it’s called an AUX cable) to connect it. I can also charge the phone at the same time using an adapter in the car’s cigarette lighter, connected by another lead to the phone’s lighting socket.

I won’t be able to do this with a new phone. How am I meant to listen to music? There must be some way. Is there any way to charge it at the same time? Music runs down the battery a lot.

You can get an headphone socket adaptor that plugs into the Lightning port.  Then you can't charge at the same time though.  Apple want you to buy their Bluetooth headphone to listen to music so they ditched the socket.

The belkin adaptor is good but a bit pricey at rrp. They turn up on ebay for a lot less

  • I bought the belkin one (as mentioned above but from Apple shop), allows charging and provides a 3.5mm socket for the aux. Make sure you get the right one though, there are two types.

You can get an Apple cable that splits the connection, allowing a line out connection for audio and power in to charge. I used to use this before I got a car with Bluetooth.

Incorrect the headphone jack is old tech and does not fit within the technology roadmap of smart phones. Plus why bother selling the £19 lightning connector ear pods if they just want you to buy Bluetooth headphones.

Move from Apple to an alternative.

    Has it ceased to function?

@oh_really No, it still works but the battery doesn’t last all day anymore and the memory is getting full with all the updates over the years. I don’t think it’ll cope with iOS 15 and I don’t like not having the latest security updates.

The only reason I haven’t upgraded already is because my phone has Touch ID. The newer models all have Face ID which is problematic when wearing a mask.

Yes this was a nuisance when wearing a mask but some changes have been made.

If the phone does detect a mask it switches straight to PIN unlock instead.

And if you have an Apple watch you can configure the phone so it will unlock when wearing a mask provided the watch is unlocked, being worn (checks for heart rate) and within a measured Bluetooth signal strength. It still uses facial recognition but reduces the accuracy required so somebody sat next to you can't unlock the phone with their face for example.
