Our solicitor has quite rightly replied to say that no compensation will be forthcoming, and a reminder that the onus is on the buyer to make appropriate investigations prior to exchange of contracts.
If there is any further correspondence from their solicitor then I suggest you discuss the following approach with your solicitor* and if they agree then act on it.
Write a letter yourself informing the buyer's solicitor that you have disinstructed your solicitor and that any further correspondence relating to the matter should be sent directly to you as a potential litigant in person. [This stops your solicitor racking up further costs, and means the buyer's solicitor needs to be more circumspect in what they write to you]
If the further correspondence confirms that they wish to pursue a compensation claim then state in reply that whilst you do not accept liability, if they wish to supply you with a detailed breakdown of each perceived defect and the remedy they are seeking for each one, then you would be willing to give their correspondence further consideration. [Unless the buyer's solicitor is rather foolish they will understand this to be an invitation to do a lot of (expensive to their client) work before they receive an Arkell v Pressdram response from you]
Alternatively, you might find your solicitor is happy to keep on dealing with this at no cost to you because they are having a good laugh at the foolishness of the other side.
(*INAL, hence don't do this without speaking to your solicitor first, and ignore the whole thing unless the buyer's solicitor replies to what your solicitor has already sent)

I’m literally not going to do this obviously but surely you must be able to buy weed killer through the post because of places like Amazon 🤣0

We picked up the keys to our first house today and found it in this state. This is already partially cleaned up and most of the rooms were like this. They were decent enough to leave us a broom and mop though. The only thing that’s ours is the Dyson in the background.Did we get our solicitor to write a letter? No, we just got stuck in and cleaned as best we could. Not ideal on the first day of your first house but these things happen.
Your buyers should consider themselves lucky!10 -

I think it is so rude to leave a house dirty, I was busy is hardly an excuse the move wasn't a surprise. I know it wouldn't achieve anything legally but very tempting to send a letter via solicitor just to stress the vendor out and well worth the money!1
