Gucci Belt - Personalised

Hi,

Really hoping someone can help me!

I bought my partner a Gucci belt - £270 something I would never normally spend on a present but I wanted to treat him. I noticed they had an option to personalise which I thought was a lovely idea. I was really impressed with the service with it being delivered the next day by courier all the way from Italy! It was his Birthday over the weekend so I gave it to him, he was delighted with it but it's too small!! I've contacted Gucci and it turns out that because it is personalised I cannot exchange or return. Surely I have some rights against this?

Thanks in advance,
Shelley

  • Your rights are to receive what you ordered. Does the size differ from the one you chose?
  • What exactly did "personalise" consist of?  What was done to the belt to make it personal?  Was it just initials selected from a drop down list or was it more than that?  (Like a full name).

  • I have ordered the wrong size but in fairness it was really difficult to work out which size was the right one, plus Italian sizing is different. It has his initials on the inside of the belt.
  • If it's the size you ordered and uniquely personalised then you don't have any rights to a refund or exchange.  Is it the size you ordered, and if so, what's the level of personalisation?  If they've sent the wrong size, then you have a right to return it.  If they've sent the size you requested, then it comes down to how personalised it is.  If it's customised from a pre-set list of colours, material, inscriptions, etc. then you have the right to an exchange if their policy allows it.  If it's personalised with something like your partner's name or birthdate, then they don't have to help.

    My post crossed with yours.

In that case, I'm afraid you don't have the right to return or exchange it if their policy is not to offer that for personalised products.  It's down to whether they would do anything through goodwill, but they can't sell it to someone else now, so they probably wouldn't.

You can buy belt extenders, although I appreciate that rather negates the purpose of buying an expensive brand in the first place.  Other than that, how small is it?  Can he lose a bit of weight?  :)
  • Absolutely kicking myself, obviously also going to be harder to even sell it with it being personalised as well. Basically just thrown £270 down the drain.

Well you could sell it on.  If it's just his initials on the inside, that's unlikely to put many people off.  If I wanted a Gucci belt and I could get a £270 belt for £200(?) with someone else's initials on the inside, I might go for it.  At the end of the day, even if you had to sell it for half what you paid, it's better than nothing.
  • Update - Just found that they have a contact number I could ring and spoke to a lovely lady who thinks they will be able to find a solution for me. Fingers crossed! Thank you for your replies.  <3

Exactly why it would be unfair for you to expect the seller to have it back.

I would imagine it would not be too difficult for the seller themselves to remove the personalisation, which is just printed in gold onto the leather and re-sell the product.
