Why are people scrambling for petrol?

  • I can't stand people. So chuffing stupid.

If you're a 1/4 tank then you could be forgiven for needing some juice.
If you're at 3/4 tank then i don't care if you're about to set off on a 300 mile journey, you don't need to fuel up right now.

And you most certainly don't need to be emptying water bottles in a bin to then fill them up after having filled your car up. The woman that did that wants slapping in the face with those bottles.

Stations are getting absolutely hammered and only a few have sold out around here. That goes to show how much of a 'shortage' there's been - naff all.

Back in the first lockdown people stopped going places and fuel ended up dropping approx 10p per litre. Lot of money not getting spent.
What's all this madness done right now? Pushed the price up.
Claws back a bit of what wasn't spent.

But may be totally nothing to do with that and everything could be all so innocent.
    Or not.
Petrol prices were very high before this. They have been rising for a while, since lockdown finished. Think I got 110 a litre back then. Wonder the real reason of the rise in the last few months.

Regarding petrol in inappropriate containers, if people don't know then they don't know, it is a gap in education. Certainly wouldn't advocate a "slap", recent events and all.

People are people, this was only to be expected at some point. I filled up with a 1/4 tank to take it to full and with good reason.

Now I will run down to 1/2 and top up. At least until we have the drivers Boris is trying to promise the earth to. Which means for a long time yet.

Not speaking about petrol specifically but more generally here. I'd suggest that indefinitely allowing cabotage on a '3 months notice and it's gone' system would be the best thing the government can do now, especially as it's partly the cause of EU companies refusing to come to the UK (no point dropping in one part of the country to load in another without being able to fill the trailer on the bit in the middle).

This naturally should be paired with rules such as the vehicle must come in loaded and be operated domestically for no more than 7 days at a time and no more than one time in a month to protect the British industry.

But the government have gone against this and decided to attempt to recruit people who don't want the work being offered on the terms it's being offered, showing their desparation more recently as they try to recruit half of Germany.

Instead of £30 maximum spend, there should be a £30 minimum spend, that would help some of the queues. Living in south east, where the shortages are a very real problem, with shortages and massive queues, I drove up the A1 yesterday and along there was like another world, petrol wise, nearly all stations open, no queues and even got 131.7 a litre unleaded..

Just went to Tesco and had to take the back entrance because there was so much traffic for the petrol station
I reckon that the "grab as much as you can, while you can" attitude is more prevalent down south. A couple of days ago I noticed just one petrol station that had run out. Today I drove past quite a few and they all looked the same as normal - some were definitely serving fuel as I passed and there were no queues.

Cannot blame the EU for the barriers we put up, that dreaded B word will not work with other models. I cannot see an easy fix, if there is one it will not be pretty compared to what we had. This will not solve our internal issues I fear. No idea what the norm is in the UK for a French wagon (for example) delivering multiple loads and taking into account drivers hours, and breakdowns.

I read this am that our PM is now blaming the haulage industry for the issues we now have. Really worrying.
  • Passed my local Shell at 8pm last night and all pumps were open and only one car on the forecourt. Passed again this morning at 10am and again only one car and one motorbike filling up. So I swung in and topped my tank back up to the brim. Sorted!

More like 30p a litre, I remember it being around 99.7p for unleaded and now it's around 1.40 up from 1.30 at the start of the 'non-event' fuel shortage.
You're talking to a guy who keeps tally of his fill ups so I can (for example) tell you that on 16th June 2007 diesel cost me 93.9p. Not only that but the car I was on had just hit 116,557 miles.

So I know what it was costing ;)

Granted there are other places in the UK. This isn't like the weather where the media release some statement that applies to London only & blanket the entire UK with whatever is going on in London.

To give specifics, I fuelled up 15th March 2020 when fuel was £1.21.9 at Shell.
Lockdown/Furlough hit about the 24th IIRC. I'm not to a few days so I may be a little out on that but I can't be bothered to check. I wont be too far out.
I fuelled up on 9th April at £1.12.9 and again 2nd May at £1.09.9 so ok I was out with my 10p but I did say approx.

Most certainly wasn't 30p ..... not here. But then as I don't live anywhere else, I can only speak for here.

I think this highlights a problem - making excuses for idiocy.

That's like saying someone can be excused for putting their hand on the cooker as it's on because they were never told beforehand that they'd end up getting burned.

Putting juice in Jerry cans is perfectly fine. Plastic carrier bags though? Really? Come on. If the woman had been there with only carrier bags and no car then you could maybe at a reach try and pass off her idiocy (but really not!) but she was there with her car. She was simply trying to get as much fuel as she could. She'd obviously filled up her car first and was going for more because of the nonsense that is going on. Fill your car and stop.

These people are playing in to the hands of those with their master plan. If everyone just went about their business as normal instead of all this flapping then we wouldn't be in this situation.

Strictly speaking, if you're in a French registered wagon dropping in Aberdeen and collecting in Newquay, you can't load for the drive between the two

Extreme example, but allowing loading for the part in the middle would be my solution for sorting this mess out, much better than a visa that may if lucky offer a month of work.

It wasn't plastic bags, it was plastic water bottles.  Two of them.
