    What the OP might be referring to might be the "*Editor's pick!" flag and so on, which were all on Avro at the time as they were the cheapest deal for the rep they had. 

    However it still ultimately lies with us to do our due diligence, that's why I ignored Green and multiple other companies that had horrendous reviews.

    For those moving to fixed rates now 

    The price cap hike is for the variable tariffs which are based on a medium usage (3 person household). (Current £1270 cap)

    For those like me who is 1person flat, let’s assume the cap is increased to £1500 for the variable tariffs which is a medium 3 person house ) . Given I’m one person I’m 60% . 60% of 1500 = 900

    It doesn’t add up to get a 2 year fix at approximately £90 per month. £1080 year

    There is no point working it out with all that "one person = 60%" - you can't possibly get an accurate answer.

    Use exact kWh annual usage for gas and electricity separately to do a proper comparison otherwise you could totally miscalculate the best deals.

    The Ofgem rates are based on 12,000kWh gas and 3,100kWh elec and therefore can only be used as a comparison if you usage is exactly that.

    For example I'm a 4 person household yet I use double the Ofgem cap benchmark in electricity but only 25% more in gas which I expect to drop dramatically this winter with everyone out of lockdown and back out of the house during the day - probably will drop to the Ofgem cap consumption.

    If I was to compare my energy bills by saying I'm a 25% bigger household than the cap that would work out totally wrong for me - it comes to £1600 based on 1st Oct cap when in fact I'm fixed on rates much lower than the price cap paying £1800 because I'm skewed by the high electricity consumption - whereas if I was paying the actual cap rates per kWh then my bill would be £2120 per year.

    I also bear in mind the fact that most of my gas usage is in winter where I use about £90 per month peak in January but only £16 in the summer months whereas my elec usage is fairly flat all year round. Having a lower gas tariff for the next 6 months makes a bigger difference than it will come April next year.

    Just makes no sense to compare with "60% of the cap", so do a kWh comparison of annual cost.
  • I also took the advise from MSE to act quickly to get a good fixed rate deal so used the Cheaper Energy Club app and Avro was recommended. My monthly payment with AVRO was £178, my new payment with Octopus is a whacking £270!!!! Avro went bust the day after I switched. I was with Igloo and my new rate with them was going to be £220 per month.

    That's just bad luck.  You gambled and on this occasion, lost.  I'm in a similar position, but have saved hundreds of pounds over the years by making the right choices.  Swings and roundabouts.
  • I have to agree with AndyTony to some extent. I also switched suppliers from PurePlanet to Avro, to apparently avoid increased energy costs, which Martin was constantly saying would happen. However with Avro now going bust, I would have been better off sticking with PurePlanet on another fixed rate. Anyone currently locked in now on a 1-2 year fixed rate must be laughing, especially high end users. Whilst it ultimately was my choice to switch, Martin played a HUGE role in my decision making and I trusted in his views and his suggestions, particularly as per the MSE Energy Club. We are always hearing how easy easy easy it is to switch .......but if we still have to do all the research, history, background checks, financial stability etc then this actually becomes a very lengthy (switch) process indeed. This whole situation will definitely change the way I go about switching in future.
  • I appreciate that ML has developed a cadre of Lemming-like followers. This is part of the problem. When there is a mass migration of consumers to a recommended cheap tariff supplier, it is unlikely that the supplier will be fully hedged against future fuel prices for all the customers that it gains. When the market turns, these suppliers then struggle as they end up  paying more for the energy that they buy than they can sell it for.
  • I am being moved from Avro to Octopus. Does anyone know when I can apply for the Warm Home Discount with Octopus? (I have qualified for this discount before and was waiting to apply with Avro-but didn't). Is my account still in limbo at the moment, or am I officially with Octopus now? I see on Octopus website that applications are now open and as I am in the broader group, this discount is only offered on a first come first served basis so I do need to apply sooner rather than later. But I want to make sure I am an official customer and apply at the right time.
    So I repeat ....Does anyone know when I can apply for the Warm Home Discount with Octopus?
