Martin was on the telly many times telling people to switch to avoid big price hikes.

Even Martin Lewis doesn't know the finer points of how an energy company is performing he will be going off prices quoted on comparison sites.

Now if you want a quote you are most likely to have to visit the energy company's site rather than a comparison site.
Someone please tell me what money is

I am with AVRO and when I joined they weren't the cheapest quote, they were around the 4th I think Green and a couple of others gave cheaper estimates on the totals I gave for comparison. I would rather take the risk with cheaper sites than the big 6 even if they eventually fold. I always add at least 10% to my actual figures to account for more usage.
In 8 months I've only used  1429 kWh of electric and 639 kWh of gas and I gave annual usage readings of 2500 electric and 3100 for gas.

  • I did have look for this info on the web and couldn't see it either, didn't pay attention to gas price rises either,I'll pay more attention in future to the bigger background picture.
I did not appreciate the significance of the filter for bigger providers either.

I am a low user being out most of the day, and was paying £40 a month with AVRO for 6000kwh gas 700kwh electric.
Any idea what my cap price would be when switched?
    TIA
I did a quote with AVRO (who I was with before they went under) and they were going to charge me 61 a month on dd. Like you, I was a low end user, paying 45 a month for gas and electric.
Avro were reasonably priced. The SoLR will not be reasonably priced, and will also reflect the criminal cost of gas at the moment, expect the gas portion of your bill to double. (for example I was paying 2.4p per unit with avro, expect this to now be 5p at least)
I'm not sure where you get the idea that a kWh of gas will be "5p at least". The price cap is pretty close to 4p.

  • ML has become the modern equivalent of The Pied Piper. Many people follow his advice as if it was gospel. I am not blaming ML as this site is called MoneySavingExpert; however, as others have said, the buck stops with each of use for the decisions we take.

I just wonder wonder whether Ofgem will now reconsider its proposal to auto switch consumers who stubbornly stay with an established supplier on its SVT. I am not sure what criteria they will use to choose their supplier/s and, more importantly, will Ofgem pay compensation if their chosen supplier goes bust?
  • Do your homework everybody before commiting to deals in the future....look at the trends for energy prices and try and find out how specific companies purchase their energy...fly by nights who operate hand to mouth may be the cheapest but might not be the best looks like profits they can make are slim even in normal times.
    Enough now.
    What's happened has happened now.
  • Fantastic idea if we could have a list of all companies that were going to go bust next month, not just energy companies, include travel companies and retailers as they frequently go bust.

It would save us all a lot of headaches, employees could start looking for new jobs, suppliers could stop sending them goods, banks could withdraw their credit facilities and most importantly customers could stop buying from them or making payments.

It would probably make the insolvency happen quicker as well which would prevent people wasting time trying to save the company with redundancies, buy-outs, rescue packages, asset sales and restructuring.

I'm up for it, going to register a website and get something up and running on www.goingbust.co.uk
