Nightclub below flats - noise issue

There is a nightclub down below my rented apartment in the basement. At the time when I moved in I had no idea the bass sound could be so penetrating. I complained to the city council, they sent people to my flat to investigate but could not care less. One of guys just said he couldn't hear the noise at all....Then COVID came and ironically it was the biggest relief for me because I could finally sleep well!

Now the nightclub might open soon, and my question is:

How on earth could the nightclub get the license in the first place to operate below residential building?

Anything i can do about it or should I just move?

I would also say move - it is one advantage of renting - moving is stressful, but less so than fighting a battle you are unlikely to win on lack of sleep.

personally I wouldn't of bought or rented a flat above a night club. the answer to your question is just move.
  • Many mortgage lenders decline to lend against properties above or next to commercial premises precisely because of the potetial difficulties of selling such properties.
If you choose to rent a property above a nightclub, you can expect to experience noise (or even street agression etc). The time to consider this was prior to agreeing the contract.
As for when/why the Planners granted consent for the nightclub, that's now history, unless the nightclub is operating illegally.
  • I stayed in a hotel once which had a nightclub in the basement. My room was on the 2nd floor. I couldn't get to sleep until the club closed around 3am.

I think you need to move.

A friend and I were staying on a Greek island and our room was above the nightclub/disco.  After we complained the tour company moved us to another hotel which was actually much nicer.  This was in the days of getting holidays from glossy brochures, very useful at the time

This is one reason why lenders do not like commercial ventures next door or below their investment. It can change from being a book store to a smelly take away to a nightclub
