  • Scotrail do an excellent Club 55 promotion. Over 55's can travel anywhere in Scotland for just £15 return.

Add £4 and you can travel First Class.

    Excellent bargain.

NXEC is great if you are felxible about times of travel and/or can book in advance. Single tickets between Doncaster and King's Cross (A journey I do regularly) start at £9 one way. I looked at getting a season ticket as I don't qualify for a railcard but travel to and from London 2 or 3 times a month at least but the season ticket doesn't give me any savings - I think it would if travelled daily or something - are there any other alternatives? I have M.E but don't claim disability benefits so i don't qualify for a disabled person's railcard either - very frustrating!

If you are 'forced' into paying walk on fares rather than advance purchase look into rebooking at Peterborough and getting an FCC train from there. It adds a bit to the journey time but can often be cheaper.
  • Money Savers may be interested in the following if you are making several long distance trips across any consec. 7days :
All-Line Rover valid on all National Rail services for unlimited travel anytime £375 (valid on Cornish + Scottish Sleeper trains but not LU/DLR etc.) Some national railcard/child discounts available.
First class version £565, complimentary meals on Virgin trains included (and any free food /tea + coffee that is offered in first class by other train companies eg. Great Western/Cross Country/TPE)
Good for a holiday touring UK as well.
Any questions feel free to ask me.
PS forgot to mention 14 day versions also available
  • Hello!

I'm currently 15 years old and have just got a job in Chessington World of Adventures!

Really looking forward to it, apart from the train fare =P

While I am 15 years old, and working on Saturdays I can pay £2 for a Cheap Day Return, I believe!

I have a few questions though please:

    1) How much will the train fare be on weekdays when I am 15, during holiday times, traveling at around 8am and coming back around 6pm?

    2) When I am 16 years old, how much would it be on Saturdays, and again on Weekdays during the holidays?

    3) I have heard of a Young Persons Railcard, which is £24. Is this worth getting? I heard it's not valid in peak times? Is that during the week before 9.30am?

Who can advise me on how to make my journey cheaper, so I can save up more money.
Best Wishes from a Young MSE

    Stephen!

It depends where you are traveling from...

Have a play with the journey planner here to check fares - http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/jp

and information on the Young Persons Railcard is here - http://www.youngpersons-railcard.co.uk/

A Young Persons Railcard is valid at any time, however for all journeys made at or before 10am, Monday to Friday (excluding July & August and Public Holidays), a minimum fare applies, and the minimum fare is £8 or £16 depending on the type of ticket. So during the week you would gain no benefit, apart from in July & August.

If you are doing more than 3 days a week, it would be worth considering a weekly or monthly season ticket.

Hi, I am looking to book travel for a friend and would like some help if anyone can.
He needs to travel from Exeter to Bristol airport to arrive by 09.15am latest. The first National Express coach apparently doesnt leave Exeter til 08.40 which is obviously too late, and the train fare is over £30 return which he cant afford - I would be grateful for any ideas anyone has please? Are there any other coach companies in that area, or ways to get train cheaper?

    All/any suggestions welcome. Thanks

Well has he looked for cheap single fares rather than a return on the train? I would guess yes, as the return train fare is not 'over £30 return' - it's either a lot less or a lot more, depending on whether it's peak hour or not. If he has, and there aren't any, he's stuck. If not try it.

There's also a business saver return at £24.10 which seems to have good availability - you have to add the airport bus to that though.
