Dont normally use aldi's, but just wanted a few things for myself and a old guy up the road. he wanted a victoria sponge, went to the cake section, they dont sell victoria sponge believe it or not. wanted some fly spray, no sorry dont keep that. and a young girl there trying to manoeuvre a pallet of tinned goods, which looked like it weighed 1/2 a ton, didn't know what a steak and kidney pudding is.
I knew there was a reason I don't use aldi, and this morning reminded me what it is.
I am mulling over your dilemma whilst enjoying a generous slice of the "Strawberry and Clotted Cream " cake, which is so much better than a Victoria sponge:

Holly Lane Strawberry Cornish Clotted Cream Cake 403g

The OP would have closer to the italicised text if they were buying a Victoria Sponge.

I see what you mean about not being able to get some basic stuff, but,I love Aldi, I shop there all the time .Although, I feel like I've noticed a gradual change in the 'customer service' type of etiquette. The staff in my local Aldi have taken to yelling loudly (all be it friendly type of yelling, but still very loud) at customers to let them know that there is space free in another queue and being very pro active in herding people to hurry up in the queue ,also I've often seen them slamming down packets of stock and swearing and being quite aggressive, even when they can be overheard by customers. I know somebody who works there and apparently it's not really the staff's fault ,they are put under pressure to work to targets and more or less told in their training that it's ok not to spend time on etiquette and customer service on the shop floor and it's more important to put the stock out and get stuff done. Also ,in the evenings ,when it's quiet, they appear to be 'chatting on the phone' as they are putting through your groceries on the till, not sure quite what that's all about.they've got some sort of ear piece ,I don't know if it's to communicate with shop colleagues when it's quiet, but they seem to be chatting and laughing as though it's a social call

So you don't use any baking powder when making it at home?
Overall that list of ingredients in the supermarket one is
    Sugar
    Flour (with standard treatment agents)
buttercream (sugar, butter, glucose syrup, clotted cream)
    strawberry jam
    egg
    oil
    milk
    baking powder
    salt
All of these are things you would use if baking at home. Although probably not oil in most recipes.

Then yes there are some additives, mainly to extend the shelf-life such as a preservative, emulsifiers and a humectant to keep it moist. But other than those three everything else is fairly standard, other than mainly adding syrup to the buttercream.

I've noticed the Aldi staff speaking on those headsets too @tofu-eater_3. I  think they're probably wearing them for work reasons but it does descend into gossip and it's not a good look . Same with the shouting to get people to notice space at checkouts although that's probably well meaning.

Otherwise I find all staff I approach for help are absolutely fine.

Oh good!  More for the rest of us!!!

Aldi (& Lidl) are great for standard items - fruit, veg, meat, fish, WINE! and alcohol, milk, yoghurt, chips etc.  I've never seen them selling aspirin so have stopped looking for it.

Their focused campaigns - Oktoberfest will be here soon - are great to get special items.  Fly spray was probably available earlier in the year during one of their garden/outdoor campaigns.

But it's the same as all the supermarkets - I would never buy coleslaw from Sainsburys or Waitrose as what they sell is vile.  Tesco or Asda or Lidl are great.  Just depends on what you like.

They sell Paracetamol at every Aldi near me. I'm not sure about Asprin though as I don't use them.
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

All of which could be sorted out with the right manager. Everyone at Aldi is under pressure to perform, and it takes the right kind of person to get their team firing on all cylinders. If someone from Head Office witnessed what you have described, heads would roll.
