I certainly wouldn't be writing it off on that basis.
There are so many other cakes that unless you take a slight interest in baking, many these days wouldn't know what a Victoria sponge is. Try asking them for a plain cake or similar and I should think they will have a bit more of a clue what you're looking for.
I'm approaching middle age and I don't even know what Steak and Kidney Pudding is. Heard of it but... what... is it just a different name for a pie? Laugh if you wish but people these days (even some old timers) wouldn't know what it is as it's just not common at all any more.
Remember, since the 80s and 90s of worldly foods being available, those traditional English foods are dying out. It's all about burgers, pizza and nandos these days.
If you choose not to evolve with the language (and it's evolution is a lot quicker these days), then you can't complain when you get left behind.1 -

I love steak and kidney pudding! But it is difficult to find - Frey Bentos seems to be around mostly but I don't think that is very nice.
For the uninitiated it is made with a sealed suet crust in a "Christmas Pudding" shape.
Anyone brought up on a Be-ro book knows what a Victoria sponge is. Maybe that's old-fashioned - I don't know what people use to teach their children about baking these days but I don't think they could go wrong with a Be-ro book still.0 -

I love steak and kidney pudding as well, especially in winter. It's still around, never went away really, a lot of traditional foods have made a come back including pie and mash. The nicest victoria sponge from a main retailer I have found is the Marks & Spencer one.0

cattom said:Dont normally use aldi's, but just wanted a few things for myself and a old guy up the road. he wanted a victoria sponge, went to the cake section, they dont sell victoria sponge believe it or not. wanted some fly spray, no sorry dont keep that. and a young girl there trying to manoeuvre a pallet of tinned goods, which looked like it weighed 1/2 a ton, didn't know what a steak and kidney pudding is.
I knew there was a reason I don't use aldi, and this morning reminded me what it is.0 -
Don't think it's just Aldi. My local Tesco's have been a bit hit and miss with some products I buy over the past month or so and that's a Tesco Extra. I think it will only get worse before it gets better.
If my local Aldi is anything to go by, they seem to be less prone to "shelf gaps" and arbitrary shortages than the bigger supermarkets, and that might mean that their distribution process is already flexible and effective...
... or it could be that the regional Aldi depot is just down the road.2
