Ed, you need a new job. No more holding off until the new year, no more restricting yourself to public sector only, no more only looking for home working (if that's what you've been doing). You need to get out of there, even if where you're going is only a stopgap.
And next time the opportunity comes up to be the boss, please, please go for it?Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

You sound incredibly frustrated - I think @South_coast has a valid point... this kind of work stress isnt good for anyone and we all know how capable you are.DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Having a job-type you have prepared an application for is what I meant by having an escape plan. It doesn't only mean giving up work, it primarily means doing the preparation for escaping from the current situation. Even if the job advert is not there yet, tweak your evidence and competency statements. Major on evidence of your emotional intelligence and empowering and inspiring your staff, rather than the hard delivery you have achieved as that is the skillset so sought after in senior leadersSave £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I am at £1286.68/£3000 or 42.89% of my annual spend so far

I will respond to thoughtful comments later but in midst of busy daddy daughter day.
Took both 🐈 to vet for a medication review because of new rules coming in re. Repeat prescriptions. Vet told me a) the check can usually be combined with vaccines (that's good) and b) the rules weren't in force until January 2024. So why the heck did they charge me for a consult in November 2023?
New flea 💊 prescribed. Unfortunately it's 40% more expensive and the prescription certificates have gone up by 20%, too.
Will now cost c. £220/year just for prescription flea treatments. Is anything getting cheaper?5 -
Ouch Ed! That’s a lot! I take it you’re buying online as you mention prescriptions? Is it gold-plated? Do they both need the tablets rather than the spot on stuff? One of mine has tabs (Credelio) because he hates the spot on, but the other has to put up with the cheaper stuff!
(Agree with SC. Life is too short to be as miserable at work as you seem to be.)Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

@themadvix - that's an annual review, 12x pipettes of spot on stuff bought online and 4x prescription certificates. Yes, it may well be gold-plated4
