It appears as though you misremembered and your account was with either Bank of Scotland or Halifax.Deleted_User said:Deleted User said:Deleted_User said:Deleted_User said:I always used to get confused with the Bank of Scotland (which owns Halifax) and is in itself owned by Lloyds banking group
AND
The Royal Bank of Scotland, which is a completely separate bank and owned by Natwest. The confusion should cease eventually as the RBS branding is becoming less and less.I've always found the easiest way of distinguishing them is to refer to the first one as HBOS which was formed in 2001. See this article:HBOS was a holding company like NatWest Group and Lloyds Banking Group - none of these are banks.... and 1 + 1 = 11.For several years I also had an account with a BANK called HBOS.I am also a shareholder in Natwest and my stockbroker assures me it's a bank and not a department store..My involvement with HBOS was many years ago and I can't recall all the fine details and it's not that important. The only reason for referring to it was to try to help those who were confused by the similarity of the names:1 the Royal Bank of Scotland2 non-Royal Bank of ScotlandNatwest being related to Royal and HBOS being related to non-Royal
I also have problems remembering things that happened years ago. It is just another reminder of the passing of the years.

Yes indeed. I just love discussing minutiae.Zanderman said:Great thread.
I also notice that on my Equifax credit report, they say I have a current account with RBOS.
All the other agencies refer to it as RBS, even Clearscore which gets its data from Equifax. Go figure.

That's a new one! Maybe they're just being literal with the initials, Royal Bank Of ScotlandRG2015 said:

Surely they're just trying to make their abbreviation as similar as possible to HBOS?Zanderman said:

And a capital R is quite similar to a capital H, just needs a bit of tippex (youngsters can google that) to the top of the R and the illusion/confusion is complete.eskbanker said:

Maybe the apparently gratuitous capital 'O' was added in order to achieve regulatory capital requirements....Zanderman said:

Yes, thereby adhering to the BOE CRD.eskbanker said:

Noooo! Please don't open this that wide.Deleted_User said:I'm surprised that no one in this thread has mentioned the South Bank yet. I'm banking on visiting this Bank soon so would be interested to know what accounts can be opened there.
There would be 1000s of them.
Not just the generic field banks, woodland banks, river banks, hedgebanks, canal banks etc but every place named after specific ones of these (even our very own eskbanker).
Not to mention bank engines for the trainspotters amongst us.
I'm banking on this discussion ending soon.3 -

No, Lloyds Banking Group operates as Lloyds Banking Group or LBG.
Also, brand names are not necessarily 'individual operating companies'...
MBNA is a brand of Lloyds Bank plc.
Halifax is a brand of Bank of Scotland plc.
Bank of Scotland plc also uses the Lloyds Bank brand occasionally.
