I think I understand now silvercar - Mexico is on USA's green/amber list? But is USA not on UK's red list so would Scottish Gov not insist that we quarantine on return? It's confusing so hope you don't think my question is silly.
USA is on the UKs amber list. So no quarantine isolation required. Flights from Mexico to USA are operating.
Whether it is a good idea to travel to Mexico at the moment is your decision.

But isn't the US restricting entry, at least partly based on the Covid jab you've had?

I think they want Pfizer, AZ isn't recognised.

You need to weigh up the risk.

Can you get travel insurance for Mexico/USA?

You may catch covid in Mexico or USA and have to isolate there.

No guarantee USA will stay on Amber list. Could be moved to red list while you are away.

Currently Tourists can’t enter USA from Mexico.

What's that based on? Havent seen anything mentioning Tourists by Air aren't allowed from Mexico - land border has different rules.
  • UK Gov website says The USA has not yet confirmed that it will accept the UK’s proof of vaccination record. You should follow the entry rules for unvaccinated people ; which are self-quarantine for 7 days on arrival in USA

As it happens one of my friends went to Mexico last month and was caught by the change to red list status. She found that Mexico is still on the French equivalent of the green list and so has gone there; after ten days in Paris (with no need to quarantine there) she will return to the UK.

I wanted to go on a 'good' holiday after I paid my mortgage off but delayedmaking plans due to covid. Just starting to look again now. I live 11 miles from Scottish Airport. The country I'm looking at is on red list - so this means staying in a covid hotel when back? Think I'll staycation instead  :/
A good holiday means travelling to a red list country. Perverse world we live in today.
As I hope you can understand Thrug, I just want to go home, so yes.

Naturally I have chosen not to do so on the basis of advice given by the UK government, but that doesn't mean I want to see family, including the 2 babies been born since last March for first time.

Different people have different priorities, that is natural.

If we left from an English airport but live in Scotland, where would we quarantine, England or Scotland?
Book the cheapest Ryanair flight from any airport in England to anywhere outside the Common Travel Area, departing within 24 hours of your arrival. Complete the Passenger Locator Form as instructed on the UK Government website https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-safer-air-travel-guidance-for-passengers#transiting-through-england indicating you are exempt from day 2 and day 8 testing and quarantine as a transiting passenger. Whether you take that cheap Ryanair flight or just go home is up to you 😉

potentially and expensive gamble and possible to be denied boarding without a hotel booking if arriving from red country
(it has not been made clear if separate tickets would qualify as landslide transit - open to abuse if so)

All arrivals into the UK from a red list country are required to book the UK Government’s Hotel Quarantine package. Proof of booking will be checked by your airline before departure to the UK, and by Border Force, on arrival into Terminal 4.

The quarantine process applies to passengers arriving directly from a red list country, who will be met from their flight by a dedicated transfer bus and taken to the Terminal 4 Red Arrivals Facility.

The process also applies to passengers arriving by an indirect route into Terminal 2 ,3 or 5, who have been in a red list country in the past 10 days. These passengers will disembark into the respective terminal and follow the red triangle Terminal 4 connections route for their transfer to the Terminal 4 Red Arrivals Facility
