If we left from an English airport but live in Scotland, where would we quarantine, England or Scotland?

  • It doesn’t matter where you leave from ,where do you return to ?
If you returning from a Red country and arrive at an airport in England , then you will quarantine in England . It will be a hotel close to the airport you arrive at and you will be transferred there from the airport as part of the Managed Quarantine System .

I wanted to go on a 'good' holiday after I paid my mortgage off but delayedmaking plans due to covid. Just starting to look again now. I live 11 miles from Scottish Airport. The country I'm looking at is on red list - so this means staying in a covid hotel when back? Think I'll staycation instead  :/

A good holiday means travelling to a red list country. Perverse world we live in today.

I agree Thrugelmir. I really worked my socks off to pay my mortgage off. It was an endowment mortgage. Now  have spare money for a holiday but not for both a good holiday and a covid hotel.

Not all countries have the same red lists. Find a country that has your chosen country on its amber or green list and spend 10 days there before heading home. It will be cheaper and more pleasant than a quarantine hotel.

eg if Mexico was your chosen destination. Spend 2 weeks in Mexico, then head for USA for 10 days before coming home.

You read my mind silvercar. It was Mexico. Would I quarantine in USA and not Mexico as it woud be cheaper in the USA? Would I do the day 2 and 8 checks in USA or Scotland? I've ignored all this so far as been going into work every day bar weekends since pandemic started.

day 2 test (and day 8 if applicable) would be taken in the UK. Follow this if international flight arrives in England (or the Scotland link if international flight arrives in Scotland) https://www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-to-england-from-another-country-during-coronavirus-covid-19
you would need to look at the US requirements for travel from Mexico

I think I understand now silvercar - Mexico is on USA's green/amber list? But is USA not on UK's red list so would Scottish Gov not insist that we quarantine on return? It's confusing so hope you don't think my question is silly.

The rules on arrival will be based on the highest level country you have been in in the previous 10 days
If you went from a red country to an amber country and then back to UK
follow the rules for red if you spend less than 10 days in amber
follow the rules for amber if you spend more than 10 days in amber

Currently Tourists can’t enter USA from Mexico.

You also need to consider that your insurance may not cover you for travel to countries on Red list
