    Oh. My understanding of the 1.6/1.9 shells issue is from the late 80s when a colleague bought a written-off 1.6GTi and reshelled it to create a Group N rally car (quite successful too), and another acquaintance saw it, thought I'm having some of that and did the same using a 1.9 as a donor. He came unstuck at the first hurdle when the mismatch between block and shell reared its head.

    That was the accepted reason at the time; maybe there was more to it than that. 
  • I had both 205 gti's what a difference between the 1.6 and the 1.9 though, sold my 1.9gti in 1990 for 10K to put down deposit on buying my first house, I almost cried when it went but great cars and great memories.
