After hiring a car from Europcar at Inverness airport I signed the agreement and set off
On our return I received my credit card bill of £301 for extra insurance from Europcar .
I’ve rung there complaints dept they said as I signed the agreement there was nothing they could do .
At no time when I collected the car was car insurance costings discussed so I feel that I’ve been missold car insurance
So at the moment I’m at a loss
Can anybody offer help or advice on what to do next please

Did you read the agreement before you signed it, and was there any reference to insurance in there?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

That, and depending on how long the hire was for it's possible you went for one of the more expensive insurance packages
  • No I didn’t read the agreement as it all been paid beforehand .
It was more the fact that no amount was discussed then the agreement put in the envelope and off we went

Just did a dummy booking and got the following:

    Total price excludes
    • Super Personal Accident Insurance GBP 64.00 per rental
    • Value Cover. Glass, Lights and Tyre Protection GBP 79.97 per rental
Is that what they are trying to charge you for, because it is very unclear that that is an additional cost?

  • Yea super personal assistance
    roadside recovery and
    Premium Protection Package
    Total of £301

IS INSURANCE INCLUDED IN THE RATE QUOTED?
When you rent a vehicle from Europcar, Third Party Liability cover for Bodily Injury and Property Damage will always be provided, in accordance with the legal requirements of the country of rental. This cover is automatically included in the rental at no extra cost.
The level of coverage provided depends on local legislation and markets. Please check with an agent when booking or picking up the vehicle. At time of booking Europcar presents a summary of the cover(s) included or excluded. Additional cover(s) not included in the rate can be purchased at the time of rental (subject to payment of an additional daily charge).  Prices are displayed on the booking confirmation To select rates with cover included when using the Europcar website, simply click on the link "Check rates including basic coverage" when you arrive on the "choose vehicle" page.

Did you even bother to read the T&Cs before you paid for it?

Read documents before you sign them or dont complain afterwards if you've signed up to something you didn't want... the Motor & Insurance forum here are littered with stories of people taking on credit hire after an accident because they didn't bother to read what they were signing and just "assumed" the hire car being delivered was a courtesy car.

Well over half the time when people say "no one told me" and you play the recording... they had been told and so clearly weren't listening.

well, you wont make the same mistake twice now will u...
Car hire is designed to catch u out with addon's, knowing that most dont read paper or the e-screens they do, u just sign and boom, your card gets hit, a well known thing :)

Same for the peeps who get US car rentals in the UK, so the package is complete and they dont need extra insurance, yet the amount of threads i read from Orlando bound visitors is the "i was tired and signed for an extra package i didnt want nor know about, so i was mis-sold/scammed, etc"  ..........

Fear not, i made the same mistake 10yrs ago in Vegas, and woke up married the following day ! :D:D:D:D

I took over the car hire contract checking from my husband after he had signed one without reading to our cost once.
they can be really sneaky, include prepaid tank of fuel (not good value- always opt for full to full or similar) excess insurances (not required as we took our own independently) etc
One time we turned up in the US and they told us that they did not have the grade of vehicle we had booked so would upgrade only for the daily cost of this upgrade to appear on the contract. I stated we did not want a paid upgrade, they removed the upgrade charges...and other things they had tried to sneak in that I spotted and we still ended up with the upgraded vehicle.
This had been a fairly costly lesson for you but likely to be something you will not get caught out by again (and reading before signing is not just applicable to car hire contracts)
