OP, if you're happy to pay an extra £1/m with EE for an extra 6gb data, then ask EE to put you on their £10/m for 10gb data (+U/L calls + texts) sim only plan. This is a Uswitch exclusive plan but EE will give you the same deal over the phone if you ask them nicely (i got the same deal via EE telesales recently). Of course the downside is that you enter into a new 12 month EE contract and EU roaming isn't included so these may well put you off.
The 10GB for £10 is a decent "worst you would accept", but I believe it is 4G only (not that that is likely to be a big issue).

Get a quote from Plusnet or similar for the right level of cover you want at a nice price.  Then ring EE and ask them to match.  It works every time for me.  Even with the current round of increases.

Yes, that is what I have done before.

I was just amazed by the fact that they were giving me no choice but to start a new contract, which flies in the face of their promise that existing customers would not be affected by the roaming charges as long as they stay on their current contract!
How is EE breaking that promise?
    Quite clearly - they said:

    "Will these changes affect me?

For pay monthly handset and SIM customers:

If your plan started before 7 July 2021: If you're on a pay monthly plan and your contract started before 7 July 2021, these changes will not affect you."

They left out the "until we force you to change plan!"  They are getting on like the big kid at the sand pit (with the price rise & roaming changes, both compounded by this) & because they are getting away with such acts, others will copy their behaviour (Vodafone on the first two already).

When it comes to mobiles, loyalty costs!

That's actually a decent deal considering EE are normally quite expensive and its a 5G plan (i'm on it). Personally I wouldn't touch the likes of Lebara with a bargepole as you don't get all the extras such as wifi calling, VoLTE, short code SMS,  Visual Voicemail which you do when going direct with the main networks. IMHO the 'trick' is to use the main networks but not to pay their silly regular prices, ie go through the likes of uswitch or mobiles.co.uk so you get the best of both worlds.

I stand corrected that it is 5G.  :)

The fact EE are usually overly expensive doesn't necessarily mean a less expensive deal is a great deal.  Of the things you mention, only WiFi calling is of interest to me.  The 100 international minutes are useful to me.

    Horses for courses.

I called EE and was offered this deal, it apparently being the cheapest they offer, despite somehow being reduced from £16.

I switched from PAYG to my old contract in 2018, which was £11 something for UL calls/texts + 250meg of data which I got almost three years ago. I very rarely use data so it doesn't bother me too much, so was quite shocked that what was offered in the text message was so data heavy.

I was an PAYG Orange customer since 2006, and the guy at the EE shop was surprised I still had an Orange SIM card, let alone that it still worked. They were trying for years to get me on a contract, their silly phones calls usually ending in their operators getting parred including a funny incident (for commuters) at a packed tube station. It turns out that they only had my name and address on record and not my DOB, so at one point were effectivly trying to unlawfully sell a child a phone contract, LOL!

PAYG is 17p per minute/text, which is ludicrous. The guy on the phone actually went on the MSE website and told me off the record that I am better off leaving EE, especially after seeing my service usage data.

1p mobile && Lebara seem to be so far the better deals. I wish I joined either of these back in 2018. I had considered it, but customer loyalty and that, which doesn't seem to exist in EE anymore...

Where does it say that? I can only see £5/m off on BT Mobile sim only plans if you're a BT Broadband customer:

    https://www.bt.com/products/mobile/sim-only-deals/

And 10% off selected EE plans:

    I have never heard of 50% off - though £5 would be 50% of a £10 plan.

£5 off BT Mobile plans,  not EE plans.

Cheapest BT Mobile plan appears to be £11 for 1GB data.
