Issues with British Gas

Hi I moved house a few months ago and signed to British Gas for both gas and electric as that was the properties energy provider. I’ve given them 3 meter readings for each fuel so far as the smart meter is not communicating with them.

The electric readings were;
8th March-29185
19th July-30622
18th August-30948
which they work out as 1,763 kWh
which I believe is correct but the gas is another kettle of fish!

the gas readings were;
8th March-08928
19th July-09320
18th August-09351

I work out that I have used 423 kWh between those dates but British Gas are saying I’ve used 4,710 kWh!

is that even possible during the summer?
I can’t work out those figures and I want to make sure I’m right with my figures before I go in all guns blazin’

I’ve been paying £108.09 for a 3 bed house but they’re saying it’s not enough and I owe more. I was paying less on a prepaid meter at my old 3 bed property.

    I think you are getting your units mixed up, I suspect you have used 423 cubic metres of gas, which you multiply by 11.18 (or so) to get kWh.

    Gas meters always measure the volume used, never the energy used. Of course it's possible that your meter isn't displaying cubic metres but some other unit.

    My meter displays 100's of cubic feet. In the last month or so I used 17 units, this is how my supplier worked out the kWh:

  • Hi yes I am confused 😂

    I contacted them a few weeks back as I felt something was wrong and they made changes but I still have an overwhelming feeling somethings not right if £108.09 is not covering a summer month.

    They made changes to the account which makes no sense but this changed.

    So what units does your gas meter say it is measuring?
  • It’s metric cubic meters

    Then BG's calculation appears to be basically correct (423 x 1.02264 x 39.3 / 3.6 = 4722).
  • Ok thank you. Maybe I should look at leaving them then as they’re really expensive.

    How much are they charging per kWh and what is the daily standing charge?

    Mine is 2.89p per kWh and 18.7p per day.
  • 3.169p per kWh and 25.334p per day standing charge. Who are you with? I was thinking about going to octopus but they don’t seem to be much different to BG

    Octopus Flexible, however the rate I pay seems lower than their advertised rate for that tariff. I was on a fixed tariff until March this year but didn't switch because the estimated yearly cost on their flexible tariff was roughly the same. I just did a check on Uswitch and they reckon I can't get a better deal, BG was around £250 per year more.
  • I’ll do some shopping around. Thank you x
    I’d like a smart meter that works so I’ll see who fitting them too.
